Why would my check engine light come on sporadically?

I have a 94 GMC Vandura with a 6.55 Diesel engine. The check light comes on in drive but not in neutral. In drive the check light goes out once the RPM’s get over idle range. Not leaking oil, 85,000km on rebuilt/new engine.
