What is your opinion(s) on pointed ears?

Asked by ilvorangeiceblocks (865points) December 30th, 2009

Do you think they are more acceptable on Christmas elves or fairy folk? Do you think that Christmas elves make them seem more toyish? Would you ever have your ears made into pointed ears? What do you think of people who make their ears pointed with surgery? Is this practise acceptable? What do you think?

I’ll take pointed ears on an elf like the one Liv Tyler played in LOTR any day…

They’re fine on elves, but any real person who chooses to disfigure him or herself in such a way is a little nutso. But that’s just my opinion- someone could say my hidden tat is a disfigurement. People should be free to do as they wish with their bodies, but I am free to think they’re crazy.

Is it true about the size of ears and a man’s…er, um, no, I’m confused.

@chyna Mans’ index finger. I don’t have a link but it was in medical research writings. And no, I don’t think people should change their ears, but I’m old and I don’t even have a tattoo.

I’ve seen them on a Doberman named Matthew. They were very flattering :)

They are perfectly adorable on people who come by them naturally, such as elves, fairy folk, Vulcans, and cats.

I can’t see any virtue in surgically altering one’s appearance to resemble a member of another race or species, especially a nonexistent one.

They’ve seemed to have worked out well for Mr. Spock.

When I think “elves” I think more of Lord of the Rings type elves rather than Christmas elves. In any case I think if people want to alter their bodies in such a way it’s up to them. From a logical point of view it’s no more or less permanently disfiguring than a tattoo and I have more than one of those. No-one thinks it’s odd when a woman has breast implants or a nose job.

My first thought when I saw this question was, “Where is @Seek_Kolinahr?” because I want to hear her take on it.

Personally, I am rather neutral towards body mods of all kinds; piercings, tatoos, what-have-you. I like the ones that are well executed, cringe at the tacky, and roll my eyes when I see bad ink. Regardless, I take it case by case.

Cosmetic surgery on ears?

Arisztid's avatar

@jerv That was my first thought too.

I also agree with you regarding body mods.

I’d take elf ears over my own ears any day! But then again I’m a fantasy fanatic! <3

Most cosmetic surgery in the US is considered by insurance as being elective aesthetic surgical procedures, and hence it is a luxury. Like many luxuries it is non-essential to anyone except the person who wants it. So if someone wants pointed ears, how is this different from someone who wants to get rid of wrinkles, extra tummy flab, or add some boobage?

It isn’t for me, but who am I to judge what other people think is attractive.

Pointed ears are more attractive IMHO than gauged ears, but I do admit that they are most attractive on cats.

Body modification; do what you want. There are consequences to consider, that’s up to you. It’s all fine with me.

And with that I add, vanimle sila tiri.
