There are two processes that can be done to the iPhone: unlocking and jailbreaking.
To unlock: this means you change the iPhone so it works on another network, with any sim you want (ie TMobile).
To jailbreak: this means you change the iPhone so you can install programs directly on the iPhone. Some program examples are a chat client, ebook reader, snes emulator, wifi stumbler, IRC client, & rss reader. There are tons of programs.
It allows you to add applications to your iphone that aren’t made by apple.
It’s main purpose is to make your iPhone able to use 3rd party applications. In other words, apps that are not created by Apple. The best way to jailbreak is by using ZiPhone.
