Does New Years Eve make you feel a little nervous ?

Asked by philosopher (9065points) December 31st, 2009

I do not like this holiday. When I was a teen I had all these unrealistic expectations about New Years Eve.
People go out and party. They drive drunk and people die.
I prefer to stay home with my family and be safe.
What do you think?

I’m a little apprehensive about this new year because of graduation and college. I don’t remember feeling so sick in the past.

New years for me is a great time to go out and celebrate especially with friends and family. Just got to play it smart and don’t drink and drive!

I wouldn’t say it makes me nervous, but I hate fireworks, particularly in the hands of amateurs, and I hate being woken up, having my child woken up, and my dog woken up by the sound of fireworks. I don’t really go out much and never have, but I don’t worry too much about it when I do. I used to work late and get off around bar closing time, so I’m used to just assuming everyone else on the road is drunk anyway.

It was depressing for me when I was younger. I always promised myself that I would lose weight and get a boyfriend and have someone to kiss at the stroke of midnight next year. I would repeat it to myself, write it down, as if it made a difference. It wasn’t an intelligent or healthy goal, necessarily, and it never really happened. Instead I just grew in to my body and learned how to dress. Everything after that just fell in to place.

Nowdays it doesn’t really make me feel anything. I am saddened by the notion of human suffering from irresponsible behavior, of course. But I don’t have any sort of anticipatory feelings about it. I mean, honestly, I decided to go in to work today.

I love New Year’s! I plan on celebrating:)

I love watching fireworks!
I know there are those who aren’t careful enough to just fire off roman candles and also blow thumbs, eyes, etc., but the purdy colours in the nightsky is still an amazing sight :)
....not too bothered about all the other stuff, although I know it’ll take me a couple of weeks to get the year right when saying/writing dates.

My celebration will be a quiet evening at home with a good bottle of champagne! Will bring the New Year’s end by making passionate love!

yeeeeeeeehaaaaaaa

Great joke…this man was lecturing to a large group of people about how many times do you make love. He asked the crowd, “how many people make love three times a week?” The majority of the people raised their hands. Then, he said, “how many people make love three time a month?” Well, the number of people that raised their hands was much less. Finally, the man said, “how many people make love once a year?” This guy in back jump up and hollered, “I DO!” The lecturer said, “why are you so excited?” The man replied, “TONIGHT IS THE NIGHT!”

I usually go to a family memebers house to watch movies and play cards and go home at 12:05. We are not even doing that this year. We are staying home. I don’t like to be out driving around on New Years too much.

I’m also glad as hell that the holidays are over for a while. I’m also glad we will be getting our W2 forms soon and we can get our taxes done.

Not at all. We stay home to celebrate. We usually invite a friend or two, have a bunch of snack foods, good beer and play games. I just may go sledding around midnight if I can get anyone to go with me. How many chances does a person get to go sledding under a blue moon on New Years!?

As a child, we would spend the week after Christmas with my grandparents in San Diego. It was a tradition of ours to watch Johnny Carson and/or Dick Clark, then step onto the balcony to make noise and watch all the revelers on the beach. I thought it was sweet when my parents would kiss at midnight. New Year’s Eve always reminds me of those special times.

Between jobs I once had a job as a security guard at a plant in a not so good part of town. I got off work at midnight on New Years Eve, and I wasn’t sure I was surrounded by fireworks or small arms fire! I pulled a DC maneuver and blew out of the area ignoring speed limits and stop signs etc.. It was literally like Mogadishu all over again!

yeah admit I get a little nervous. I make sure i’m at home because I hate to hear people shooting..even though police tell them not to because the stray bullet ends up killing someone every year. But mostly i get nervous because i dont know what the new year will hold for me. hopefully it will be way better than 09

Not really. I’ve been doing the same thing on New Year’s Eve for the last 15 years. My friends and I get together in someone’s apartment in Manhattan (usually on the upper West side). We order Chinese, watch the ball drop, and play cheesy board games until dawn. No driving involved, thank goodness.

New Years has always been very anticlimactic for me. First of all I am getting ripped off if I go out to a club or restaurant. Second, I agree with the OP, people are drunk and unsafe on the roads. Third, there is a good chance I am going to have to go through a police checkpoint if I drive somewhere, which is annoying. Fourth, I don’t want to hug and kiss everybody in the room if I go to a party.

I have to say that my preference would be to go out to a dance club with great music and friends if I wasn’t getting ripped off and it wasn’t so unsafe on the road.

@naivete, I feel the same way. Just finished up college applications, now I’m stressing about graduating and moving and being smacked in the face by the real world. 2010 will definitely be interesting..
