While you are fluthering right now - do you just take it all for granted?

Do you understand the technical side of a website like this and just fluther taking it for granted?
Or perhaps you do not, but don’t really give it much thought; facebook, email, twitter or fluther. It’s there, it’s good.
Or maybe you are like me – while fluthering I occasionally stop and almost freak out trying to grasp how complex it all must be – from the initial concept idea to the actual fruition, the actual (virtual, mathematical) construction and structure of it, the maintenance of it, the mods volunteering and the jellies hallily yapping away… it’s so, well, mind-blowing!

I love it. I’ve gotten a lot of good advice here and it’s been nice knowing that I always have real people that will almost always get an answer from someone actually trying to help me.
Bruce Campbell takes everything for granted
Especially free food samples at Costco
I’m afraid I take it for granted. sigh
To me, even things like bread, cloth, and beer are amazing achievements of human ingenuity, and I know how much work goes into those. I am not a programmer, though, so I can only try to grasp what goes into website-making. Show me the technical side of Fluther, and it would be like that movie, The Gods Must Be Crazy, where the aborigine interacts with the Coke bottle.
I think many people take the whole internet for granted. Its amazing if you sit down and think about it.
Great question! I have been fluthering away, taking everything for granted. If you don’t know how something is done, I guess you tend not to think about it. I don’t know much about code or how websites are made, for example. I do think about stuff like the nifty color choices or the jellyfish art while I’m fluthering. The design elements here are great. Well, this question is a nice reminder of stuff like that. Thanks, Bendrewim!
Does anyone really think the Fluther gods enjoy being called Bendrewim? Just wondering.
Yes. I only know a little bit about code; I don’t think about it much, though.
I just read the question. Not the small words. Did fluther change the font? It’s 15 degrees minus. I had a hard time finding the beer I put in the snow. Did you know that beer cans can make tunnels? I think it’s the original can can. Cause obvioulsy cans can. Happy new year! I just got bakc from the celibration at the castle. The local commune does fireworks every year. They had good fireworkd, buit not as good as last year cheap bastards.
Ask them, @AstroChuck – you have their ear. Then post it so we’ll know. Wasn’t it Marina who thought it up and wrote about it in her profile – or am I mistaken?
@oratio What…? Sounds like a good celebration. I hope to be feeling the way you are right now later on tonight.
I don’t take it for granted, not at all, but I don’t really know how to think about it except on a small scale—a little bit of functionality, a small bug. I do notice quantities of particulars, both the many admirable features and the few details that fall short of perfection. And I do think speculatively about what it takes to keep this excellent machine running smoothly and reliably.
On the larger scale I could describe it in the most general terms, and speak of files, records, arrays, algorithms, subroutines, etc. I could talk about the GUI, but I could not infer anything about the master design behind it or the layers and interrelationships of code and the systems of data storage. I can only say it is an outstanding software product and reflects great thought, great effort, great care, and great judgment.
Every time you do that, you make me smile and laugh a little.
About @oratio I’ll have what he’s having.
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Let’s all flunk and get naked.
(Flunking is fluthering while under the influence.)
@Jeruba I never asked you about doing that first and I was wondering whether you were starting to write me off as a stalker or something. ;-)
yea… thinking everything in detail , how it is actually being realised…. im often thinking this way for many things in everyday life. it can be scary…
No, @Zen_Again, it just makes me blush and smile, and then I always want to tell you you’re cute, and then I think that would just sound dumb or condescending, like patting you on the head, and so I say nothing. But you got me with that one. <pat pat>
I can not wrap my head around the specifics that went into creating and maintaining the site. For me, it’s the same as trying to comprehend the universe… it makes my head spin! All the same, I really, really appreciate the wonder of it all. Lurve to A,B & T. is that a suitable alternative to Bendrewim?
Happy New Year, everyone!
WAIT. Zen, are you telling me that the Internet is not a series of tubes?
I think about the complexity from start to finish every so often. When I let my mind wonder like that it is like the universe opening up. It seems so spectacular that I can communicate with this little machine in my lap not connected to any wires right now with so many people across the world. Hell, the telephone, faxes, radio, tv, all still fascinate me.
I prefer to take it for granted. I used to be a network administrator (along with other things) and so thinking about the structure behind all this makes me feel underpaid.
Lol @Darwin – you are so right – but that was funny – sorry, had to smile.
I respect the effort it took to develop and the work it takes to maintain and improve. I see no evidence to suggest how it is funded. I see no advertisements!
Hey – while we’re here and @augustlan is up and about modding on the New Years – can I get a hip hip hooray for the best community manager ever!
If this place weren’t so tastefully, cleverly and sensitively modded (whether you agree at times or not with them – in your own personal experience) believe me, as one who has spent years on an umodded site which simply vanished one day – i.e. wis.dm – this place would not be the same fluther we love if it weren’t for the excellent job all the fluthers, but especially @augustlan – are doing.
Thanks Andrew, Ben and Tim for a wonderful site and to have been given the opportunity to meet such amazing people I might not have otherwise – with whom I spend New Years eve with – by choice.
And many thanks to you, lovely jellies, new and oldtimers, wis.dmers, Abers and anybody-ers – for enhancing our creative and intellectual “web experience”, for your brilliance and sensitivity in your answers, your humour and wit – and for being my friends.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
And yes! The technology that is Fluther is a mind-blowing awesome thing!
@Dog Happy New Year buddy!
@Zen_Again Back at ya! May 2010 be the most awesome year in our lives!
I am multitasking. I am doing Fluther and Answerbag. I do it to waste time here at work.
I know nothing about programming or how a website works. I just trust that the people who run it, know better than me.
@AstroChuck / @Zen_Again: I thought PnL made it up to begin with, and I coulda sworn I read somewhere that they’re not very fond of it.
@asmonet
PnL’s profile states:
I used to be an active community manager/moderator here but medical school has basically taken over my life. I also coined the term “Bendrew” and for that I will forever be in Fluther history =)
Where have you seen that they dislike it?
