Is this wine still drinkable?
Last night, my brother brought out a bottle of Marcus James Special Reserve Chardonnay vale aurora 1996 which had the colour of medium strength tea. Is it natural for an old wine to have that colour? He said it was in the fridge for a bit and then he kept it in the larder.

Pop the cork, sniff and see. Let us know.
A brown color is usually a sign that it has become “maderized”, which means that it has been exposed to oxygen (probably through a faulty cork seal). Maderization can do interesting things to a wine when it’s done in a controlled fashion (it’s what gives sherries and madeiras their distinctive flavors), but accidental mederization is usually bad news. It typically has a “musty” taste.
Wine generally doesn’t go off, it’s already fermented.
So it boils down to the “Taste” test. Okay, will wait for an occasion to try it out. He still has half a bottle of Pinot Gris to finish first.
Thanks.
If it gets you drunk, it doesn’t matter. :)
I finally tasted the stuff. Sour. Down the sink. The cork was very brittle and broke apart. Yes, it did have a musty smell which while not unpleasant and somewhat familiar, was not what I wanted from a Chardonnay.
Too bad. Thanks for the update!
