Why do you think humans are so replusive and cringe to the noise of fingernails scratching on a chalkboard?
I have looked into it a little bit and some theories are that the sound may have signaled a predator for our ancestors. Personally the noise does not get to me, but I know a lot of people who cringe when the sound is made. What are your thoughts?

For me, it’s not really the sound, it’s the feeling that it makes. It’s like biting down on fabric. It’s an awful feeling.
As for scratching a fork against a plate, that just sounds awful…
By the way, I think you mean “repulsed”, though “repulsive” is funnier. :P
I was going to say that a fork on a plate is so much worse! Maybe it’s because it’s a loud noise that’s at the upper extreme of our hearing range. I’ve heard that loud noises, especially those outside of our hearing range, can give people headaches or make them dizzy.
I think it may have to do with our sensory system. An Occupational Therapist could explain this better than I can . I never freaked out from the noise despite that it is a bit annoying. I have had OT’s tell me my Sensory thresh hold is low because some fabric annoy me. I also have allergies . I think that makes more sense in my case.
Autistic people can not tolerate shrill noises . My Autistic Son has overcome much because of Sensory Integration.
Well, now that I know how Nails On A Chalkboard feels about me, I may have to rethink our friendship.
Both nails on a chalkboard and a fork scraping on a plate set my teeth on edge. In fact I’m cringing just from thinking about these sounds.
I don’t think humans are that repulsive.
Edit : Most humans.
Humans are repulsive because, topologically, they are just tubes of shit.
Genetic memory perhaps. There could have been vicious beasts million of years ago tormenting our ancestors while making similar sounds.
