Is it best to keep things on the serious side on Fluther?

Asked by Irishmar (475points) January 2nd, 2010

I don’t think there is much “wiggle room” on this site to be silly or sarcastic (in good humor). Does it seem that way to you?

Not at all.
I get plenty of giggles from this site. I like that jellies are encouraged to be intelligent and thoughtful, but there’s plenty of sarcasm and humor on here. Flat out stupidity is discouraged, but I think that’s an excellent thing.

We never, ever make jokes here. Laughter is for fools. ~

I think there is plenty of room for humour. It’s when people answer almost every question with sarcasm and silly one-liners that gets annoying. Sometimes serious questions don’t need smart arse responses.

laureth's avatar

Well, at first, maybe. A question asker deserves at least one decent answer that helps them with their problem. However, we’re a silly bunch, too! So it’s not “be serious all the time” here, it’s just “be serious when the situation warrants it” – just like in real life.

jrpowell's avatar

Pretty much the rule of thumb is to not make jokes until a question has been satisfactorily answered.

Fluther is a bit tighter than some sites but once you get used to it the fun is there. There are some serious questions that should recieve at least one serious answer before the sarcasm and fun starts. There are other questions that are obviously silly and with those just about anything goes. It’s the utterly stupid questions that are discouraged here.

Flo_Nightengale's avatar

Not all the time. Laughing is good. I agree with @stranger_in_a_strange_land in regards to the sarcasm etc.

troubleinharlem's avatar

It depends on what /you/ think is funny, I think.

smashbox's avatar

I think we are all pretty much adults here. People here aren’t stupid by any means, people here should know when to throw humor/sarcasm in, and know when not to. If in doubt, then don’t comment.

You can absolutely make jokes here. Have you heard of the Fluther memes? Maybe @johnpowell could link you to his site where he lists them and provides links to them. If the joking gets to be too much while people are trying to answer the question a mod may insert a [mod says:] comment, but that doesn’t mean you can never have fun on Fluther anywhere. I mean, some questions just beg to be turned into a thread of insanity (like the island thread for example). I think for the most part it’s a case by case thing. Some questions are asked by people who genuinely want an answer (even though the question may be funny) so you should try to answer those seriously.

Edit: Sparknotes version: You can joke here, but use good judgment.

Do check out the unofficial wiki ^^^

As @johnpowell says so long as a question is respectfully answered the fun can ensue.

*Hint: the chat room is often random silliness.

There are a few minor bugs in chat- so I am giving another url too:

It better be okay to joke and keep things lighthearted, my balls itch if I am not sarcastic at least 2 hours a day and I am running out of talcium powder.

Honestly, I am amazed every time I see a complaint (mainly in the past three weeks) that we are too serious or intolerant of humor. There is plenty of humor here. Some of it is more in the nature of wit than silliness, and not much of it is of the gross variety, but really there are all kinds.

It seems to me that well-delivered humor of every type (including both silly and gross) is well received, as long as it is appropriate to the situation, but there’s not much interest in seeing a serious question mocked or mean-spirited jabs taken at other jellies.

My opinion – the last thing we need on Fluther is censorship of individual expression. That’s another thing that separates us from A search engine. Real people expressing serious thoughts and humorous responses in each
their own way.

laureth's avatar

One person’s individual expression is another person’s annoyingly txtspk, poorly worded, typo-filled, off-topic quip, I suppose. The mods here are good and they work hard to keep it a quality site for everyone else.

Jeruba's avatar

Just speaking personally, I would add that I have no appetite for sarcasm, which to me is a form of aggression, not humor. Witty irony is not the same thing as sarcasm, which is typically snide in character.

mrentropy's avatar

God, I hope not. I wouldn’t have anything to do.

eLenaLicious's avatar

Is that what you think? I haven’t been a Flutheran for very long, but based on some of the questions I have encountered on this site…I am pretty sure I have run into many humorous questions and answers.
Flutherans seem humorous yet intelligent. Their inquiries are serious but there is still a little wiggle room for laughter. I am just glad Fluther is more sophisticated and serious than Y! answers. You should see some of the questions and answers on that site. They range from serious to just weird, random, sexual, racist and not to mention idiotic. I am so glad I switched from Y! answers to Fluther.

Berserker's avatar

I think so.

When I get banned from here, I guess I’ll know for sure.

Note:
It has been determined that Internet Explorer is NOT compatible with our chat room

I use firefox with no problems at all.

stranger_in_a_strange_land's avatar

@Dog all the more reason I should stick with IE, No temptation to go into those poisonous places

stranger_in_a_strange_land's avatar

@Symbeline If they ban you, I’m likely to leave too, just out of sympathy and anger

Berserker's avatar

@Dog Has IE ever been compatible with anything? XD Firefox owns. :)

@stranger_in_a_strange_land—I’ll be careful not to be banished then; you not on Fluther is like Hogwart’s without Harry Potter. :D

stranger_in_a_strange_land's avatar

@Symbeline And Fluther without you would be like losing Luna Lovegood (or mabe Ginny). :^)

Flo_Nightengale's avatar

@stranger_in_a_strange_land why is a friendly chat room, poisonous?

stranger_in_a_strange_land's avatar

@Dog @Flo_Nightengale Sorry. I made a sweeping assumption. Just because they are poison for me doesn’t mean they are for everyone. [I require high structure and slow pace or I get frustrated, my autism and poor typing skills. I express frustration as anger, that just makes everyone hate me.] It’s better that I stay out of all chatrooms.

Dog's avatar

@stranger_in_a_strange_land Gotcha. It is good for a man to know his limitations.

mattbrowne's avatar

Serious becomes boring when it exceeds the 88.44% threshold. Less than 11.52% fun clogs the arteries, causes heart attacks, strokes and impotence and may reduce the blood flow. What happens the remaining 0.04%? Well, only the moderators know.

@stranger_in_a_strange_land…...........TAKE A RISK , TAKE A RISK…........ :-)
