Does anyone know why your face can be fine all day and then you wake up and its puffy?

Asked by Pandora (32436points) January 3rd, 2010

For the last 2 days I have gone to bed and woken up to swollen eyes and cheeks after the first night. After the second night I had the added bonus of waking up with Angelia Jolies lips. I don’t think its the heat because I keep it pretty cool at night. But I wake up like I had a few rounds with Ali. I have a slight cold but I’ve never had a cold do this too me. I mean I’ve woken with puffy eyes but I don’t understand the whole puffy face and lips. I thought maybe I’m allergic to my pillow but my eyes would be red and they are clear in the morning. Does anyone know what may be causing this?

Allergies?

Thanks Zen but I’ve changed my sheets and I have hypo-allergetic pillow covers on my pillow. I figure if its anything in my home or bed, I should be puffy all day long. However it only happens after I go to sleep. I do have allergies but when I have a reaction like that I will get itchy red eyes as well. I was just wondering if maybe it may be something the body does at night. Like a increase in blood pressure or something like that.

Sometimes eating too much salt the day before can cause that, and some diseases like Celiac Disease and Fibromyalgia can cause bloating and puffiness in the mornings too. But if you feel fine otherwise, I am guessing it’s an allergy of some sort, to mold, cold air, an airborne irritant, or something you ate. I once had a mysterious case of hives and my skin was swollen and itchy everywhere. I took an “antihistamine” Dristan, and that immediately got rid of the hives and itching. You might want to try an antihistamine Pandora——like Dristan, Claritin, Reactine, etc. That should get rid of the puffiness, and prevent it from returning too.

Allergies can be in the form of unknown something airborne, some food you ate, or many other things. I can always tell when the wind shifts from the north to the ‘delta winds’ because something blows up from the south that makes my sinuses fill up.

@MRSHINYSHOES Maybe it is food. The night before I had some really salty chips. I remember it irritated my lips because they were so salty. I guess I didn’t even give it a thought because I brushed my teeth right after. And I also bathed and washed my face with a new soap both of those nights. I mean I’ve used the soap before but never on my face. It has coco butter. In the morning I would just wash my face with ice cold water to bring down the swelling. Just in case I think I will take the claritin and see if that helps.

@YARNLADY I have a friend who says when a storm is passing, the change in air pressure affects you sinuses and can have that affect.

You may just be retaining water like I am. My face is always puffy and gross when I wake up. Be sure to drink your weight in ounces every day.

I think that it might have something to do with the way that you have slept too, when I sleep face down i tend to have a puffier face in the morning. This might just be a bit of a coincidence mind.
Also If I have drunk alot of alcohol the night before I tend to have a bit of a puffy red face so probably very linked to water retention like @Facade has said.

Fluids pool when you are still or in one position . Also your circulation is slower.

Salt. never eat anything salty before going to bed. salt will inflate your face and ankles in the morning. salt is a no no at bedtime.
