The "knots" that are in your back; what are they and what causes them?

Asked by Jude (32204points) January 3rd, 2010

My girl was giving me a back massage last night and came upon a few of those knots. She massaged (actually, she pushed on them rather hard) and I could feel some pain. She mentioned something about lactic acid?

These are typically the results of physical and/or psychological stress that induces severe musculoskeletal (muscular) stress that, as a result of anaerobic respiration, produces an excess buildup of lactic acid in the muscle cells.

Staying fluid with stretching and massage should help break up the build up.
