What is honor, according to you?

Asked by Spinel (3220points) January 4th, 2010

Honor…the stock image of an offended gentlemen fighting a dual doesn’t fit the bill here. Aside from popular imagery, what is your definition of honor? What do you picture when someone says ‘honor’?

Honor to me is sticking to your word.
Honor is always telling the truth, except when it will hurt someone to no good end.
Honor is treating everyone the same, those below your perceived station in life just as well as you would treat those above.
Honor is not walking by a situation of problem that you see while pretending to look the other way.

I do not believe in honor – I have no definitions for it. What is honorable? All that people say honor is should be so anyway, you needn’t recognition for it.

Honour is english for Honor!

More seriously, it is:

Living up to commitments you make to others, regardless of the availability of credible excuses.
Living up to what you believe is right to do even when nobody will notice either way.
Having an internal set of values, rather than blindly following what others say is what you should do.
Telling the truth especially when it will expose one of your weaknesses or failings.
Respecting the feelings of others even when you don’t particularly like them.
Speaking out against behaviour designed to hurt innocent others, even when it is safer for you to keep quiet.
Not taking credit for things for which others deserve it.
Not blaming others for mistakes for which they are not responsible.
Respecting others’ rights to decide for themselves even when you would do differently.

These do not cover all that Honour is.

Honor is doing what you know to be right.

Irrelevant.
A combined indicator of societal standing based on one’s “values” and the consistent application thereof. But what has honour really brought us. People who duel once their “honour” has been damaged by someone else. Samurai who commit seppuku. Muslim fathers who brutally kill their daughters for going out with non-muslims. For a civilised society, it should be just that. Irrelevant.

Honour is doing the right thing, at the right time, with the right intentions.

It’s a personal thing though, Some people feel honour very deeply, others could give a rats beehind. fair enough.

For me, as long as my “relationships” with people are truthful and respectful, That’s pretty honourable to me!

As a wee side note: I quite like the Star Trek – Klingon version of honour. but only because I REALLY fancied the klingon lady: K’Ehleyr, Worf’s mate

There are two types of honor. One is the trait that people have when they are trustworthy and behave in a civilized manner, and the other is when we show our respect toward a person who had performed an honorable act.

Being an honorable person is one of the most important traits that a civilized society can have.
