Which dog is the friendliest? I'm not very good with snooty creatures?

Asked by Matey (12points) January 5th, 2010

My brother’s got a Doberman and it doesn’t pay any attention to strangers and hardly any to anyone else apart from him. I’ve heard that they’re kinda a one person dog. I’d be happier with a gregarious dog, the kind that’d be comfortable getting a drinks party warmed up, or going up and introducing themselves to pretty strangers in the park.

A Golden Retriever, perhaps? I’m not really sure.

The friendliness of a dog also depends on YOU and how you are with people. They get thier cue from thier owners.
Wee Yorkies and Pomeranians are very friendly but quite nervy and can be timid.
In my experience a mixed breed dog will be a good “friend” but again, it depends on your input.

As @scotsbloke said, it’s much less breed and more so how you’ve raised him.

Which should be with love, by the way.

Certain breeds are noted for their aloofness, they are usually but not exclusively from the working and herding groups.Terriers in general are more outgoing and frenetic in their behavior. Most sporting dogs are doofy happy friendly creatures, English Cocker Spaniels and Irish water spaniels especially so.

If you want a pure bred dog, I always suggest you go to a dog show and when you see a breed you think you might like, wait until the owner is finished showing and then ask them if you can talk to them about their dog. That way you get the real deal history of the dog, its good and bad points. Good ethical breeders do not want to just sell a dog, they want a dog to go to an owner who is prepared to deal with their breed.

I feel that your motives for getting a dog is to meet ‘pretty strangers’, rather than to love and care for a dog. Your ‘matey’ name, perhaps is very apt.

Matey's avatar

Thanks everyone, but especially ‘Word’. I also need a dog that isn’t too aggresive back to you, because I’ve got quite a temper on me. Also how easy is it to ‘rehome’ a dog after a year or so?

Grisaille's avatar

Oh. I get it now.

scotsbloke's avatar

@Grisaille I dont. lol – did I miss something?

Grisaille's avatar

I’m not sure. Still trying to determine if @Matey was being sarcastic or not.

What actually is the best way to ‘love and care for a dog’? I’ve heard the lady ones like wearing lipstick, and crop tops from Primark.Treat’em nice, y’know…

Any dog will be friendly if you treat them right.

And, we all know the ones that are friendly…Beagle, Collie, Golden Retriever, Lab, Papillion, etc…to name a few!

Also how easy is it to ‘rehome’ a dog after a year or so? What is that about?!?

downtide's avatar

The friendliest breed I know is the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, but you have to train them well and socialise them well with other dogs from a very young age.

Usually your mixed mutt who isn’t bred with an aggressive breed. But I agree with cotton. It usually has to do with how they are treated. A few breeds however do perfer to be left alone.

Cotton101's avatar

@Pandora they make the best dog of all…that is what Spunky was…

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

In my opinion, a Labrador mutt is about the friendliest dog there is. Of course every dog is different, and it’s largely up to how interact with the dog and other people, but my vote is for a lab.

Edit: I just read this: “I also need a dog that isn’t too aggressive back to you, because I’ve got quite a temper on me. Also how easy is it to ‘rehome’ a dog after a year or so?”

Please ignore my recommendation if you plan on having a temper with the dog, or re-homing it in a year.

yeah Jeff, a dog response to love, not anger! If someone had been mean to my Spunky, they would have a huge fight on their hands. Would have died for Spunky. She was a stray that one in a zillion. Miss her so much. Anyway, that is that!

@downtide I have a Staffi and she is such a friendly, happy soul. I am yet to meet a grumpy Staffi!

For friendly I would recommend a Flatcoated Retriever, they adore people and fully expect people to adore them. However, they are not a breed I would recommend for everyone’s lifestyle so, without any more information I cannot recommend a breed. Just because they are a friendly breed doesn’t mean that they are suitable for you in other aspects.

There’s a Flutherite called @Dog and he seems pretty friendly.

Likeradar's avatar

please tell me you’re not getting a dog as a wing-man and then getting rid of it once you get laid enough. Cause that would put you firmly in the waste of flesh category.

mattbrowne's avatar

@Grisaille – I’ll remember that. Thanks!

The bichon frise is extremely friendly and outgoing, most of the time.

Fernspider's avatar

My maltese x bichon frise is so damned friendly that he would gladly trade me in for his “new friend” when he meets new people.

He tried to go on a bush walk with a random family when we were at the dog park one day. Oh the pain of it all… what is with the lack of loyalty here! ;)

Lucky you. I have “attack” bichons.
