Does anyone ever eat the end pieces of a loaf of bread?

Asked by john65pennington (29273points) January 5th, 2010

For years, my family has always discarded the first and last piece of bread. its like the end pieces have a disease. no one eats them, so they are thrown out. whats wrong with the end pieces in a loaf of bread? they still make good toast. some things in life i will never understand.

They’re my favorite part of bread. I call them the bread butt.
You know how some bakeries make muffin tops now? I’d love a loaf of butts.

I grew up relatively poor.

You bet your ass we ate it.

Not I.

Assuming this question extends to pizza crust, typically no.

I’m the only one in my family who eats them, but we never get a new loaf of bread until it’s all completely gone. So everyone will eat all the normal pieces until only the ends are left and it just sits there for days unless I eat it. This means I’m the only one who can have a sammich whenever I want.

they also go great with stews, slow cooked meats with thick sauces, heavy gravies, and strong preserves, jellies, and jams.

I eat them. Generally I like saving them for soup, because they hold the chunky parts of the soup a lot better than a regular piece.

casheroo's avatar

No, and no one in my family does. I don’t know why. We feed them to the squirrels.

My brothers and I always tried to the the end piece. Sometimes, if my dad wasn’t watching we’d cut off both ends.

Thats the best part of the loaf….

Doesn’t anybody else call the end pieces the “heel”????? I thought this was a common term for such a part of the bread, and I haven’t seen it used once!! Anyhow yes, I eat it. Unless I’m feeling particularly picky then I might not. It also depends on what type of bread it is.

kevbo's avatar

I do, but I turn the heel side in on my sandwich, so it looks normal from the outside. Don’t use it for toast, though.

BBSDTfamily's avatar

Nope… I like the crust the least so why would I eat a piece that is full crust on one side? I think that’s one of the reasons the ends get discarded. I discard the first “regular” piece in the front too… it seems that if you keep the same front piece, it’s the only one that gets stale and keeps everything else fresh longer.

I love the ends of bread. They have the perfect consistency for a nice chewy snack.
Wish I had some now!

El_Cadejo's avatar

@deni i call it the elbow.

@Dr_Lawrence EXACTLY!

I like to scoop the bread part out of them and replace it with a meatball. mmmmm mini meat ball sammich.

sndfreQ's avatar

Just ate some for dinner-no problems here! But then again I’m also the guy who’ll eat those little shriveled pieces of French Fries (or maybe sometimes the ones that are a little green…is that wrong?!?)

El_Cadejo's avatar

@sndfreQ i seek out the green and burnt potato chips :P

I use them to make toast, but I don’t use them for a sandwich.

My kids won’t eat the heels under any circumstances. I will, if I need to, use them for sandwiches with the crust side turn inward, but where I think they shine is as toast. They curve when toasted so you can put a lot of butter on it and it doesn’t drip. They are also perfect for one of my favorite comfort snacks: buttered toast topped with plain yogurt.

Like @Haleth, I am the only one who always can find a piece of bread to use. My kids have to wait until I go to the store.

Jeruba's avatar

I do. They’re just another piece of bread.

faye's avatar

It’s the best part!

lillycoyote's avatar

I prefer not to, but if that’s all that’s left what else can you do?

Anonymous523's avatar

I certainly do. Delicious!

Buttonstc's avatar

I usually save them for when I’m eating something with a dip-like consistency.

When I grew up – raised by my grandparents – we always left the first and last pieces, only using them if we had run out and didn’t have any other bread. We always considered the front end piece as protection for the rest of the loaf, keeping it fresh. My two youngest brothers were raised by my parents and they take the front end slice out and use it as if it were any other piece of bread. (And that’s just weird!)

ItalianPrincess1217's avatar

I never have. I take the crust of my bread too. My fiancé will eat the ends of the bread if he has no other choice. But usually we just throw it out.

Fernspider's avatar

Wow, so many end piece eaters here! Blahch, yucky. For some reason I they really don’t appeal. We have a stream outside of our house which have cute little duckies swimming there so I through the ends to them.

They also get the mouldyish bread too. Mouldyish, it is too a word :P

Fresh homemade bread, butter and raspberry jam on a still warm, thick cut crust- heaven. Wish someone would bake bread!

Nullo's avatar

They’re not my favorite part of sliced bread, but given that I only go grocery shopping once in a while and eat a lot of sandwiches, I eat ‘em.

aprilsimnel's avatar

Yeah. I mean, it’s bread. Why wouldn’t I eat it?

SarasWhimsy's avatar

I also call it the heel of the loaf and yes, I eat it. I didn’t as a kid and have no idea why, but now I think it’s the best part!

phil196662's avatar

I stick them in the Toaster and make Heel sammies or for soup! Don’t waste them cuz the crust is where the great bread flavor is- just think Croutons…

lonelydragon's avatar

I agree with you. Throwing them away seems like such a waste. I like to save the heels and make cheese toast out of them.

Nullo's avatar

@aprilsimnel
My culinarily weird cousin doesn’t eat bread (or PBJ, or most kinds of meat, or most pastries, but he loves and adores his vegetables). Poor thing probably has his tongue mis-wired to his brain

cam6662's avatar

Heck – I don’t even eat the crust anymore, let alone the heels. Decided it was a way to drop a few calories by not eating something I didn’t like that much in the first place.

Years ago, my dad used to use the “ends” (in the Midewest we called these the heels) to butter corn on the cob – butter the bread – then rub the butter off on the corn. That was a really good use for bread heels.

Of course, if we are talking about pound cake – then the only thing I like to eat is the top crust. Wish they made pound cake without the cake – just the crust.

I keep a zip-top bag in the freezer, and toss the heels in it when the rest of the loaf is gone. When I clean out my freezer, I layer the heels on a big sheet pan and let them dry out in a 200°F oven, then pulverize them to make homemade breadcrumbs.

I love culinary recycling :)
