What old wives tale do you swear by?

Asked by SarasWhimsy (1642points) January 6th, 2010

Is there an old wives tale that you think works? Or what old school product do you use that’s been technologically replaced?

For instance, I still use a hot water bottle to warm up the foot of my bed, but everyone else seems to be using electric blankets.

Using a hot water bottle is not an old wives’ tale because it works. Snopes calls old wives’ tales “an assortment of superstitions, myths, and adages with no basis in truth.”

“Step on a crack, break your mother’s back,” is an example of an o-w-t.

Well, I throw salt over my left shoulder if it spills. I guess it works, I haven’t ever seen the devil….:-P

Can I just say I hate that phrase? (no reflection on the OP or question) It’s another example of degrading older wisdom and ‘woman’s work’. There are old wives tales that are now considered truth- so we no longer call them such. So now they’re accepted as a good idea and the knowledge of healing passed down from woman to woman throughout the ages is now removed from it’s historical connotation and credit deserved removed. Drives me nuts, it does.

I believe in honey for a cough, lemon for a fever, chicken soup for a cold/sinus issue and sweating out a low grade fever to name a few.

A few I abide by,
Have cash in your pocket on New Years Eve will keep cash in your pocket for the new year. Same holds true to a clean house, and laundry being done and put away.

Throwing salt over your sholder, and putting butter on a burn. Killing lady bugs brings bad luck….

Mosquito bite: wash with soap and water. Wet a Tums tablet and rub on the bite. Let the white film dry. Leave the film on. No itching.

Bald white men who speak Finnish as a second language have peculiar senses of humor.

I believe in the values of Chicken soup, garlic, and not putting your hands over your head if you are pregnant.
