Why does my cell phone getting a text message make my mouse not work?
My co-worker and I both recently got new mice for our computers (PC) at work. Since we switched to the new ones we have notice that if a cell phone gets a text message while within 6 inches or so of the mouse it quits working and has to be unplugged as replugged in. It is rather annoying to unplug and plug in the mouse when you forget and set your phone too close or someone standing nearby gets a message. They are optical and connected via usb cable. Has any one else had this problem and is there anything that can be done to fix this permanently? Or do we just have weirdo mice?

I’ve never had or heard of anyone having this problem, although i can’t fully discount that it could possibly happen, perhaps with badly shielded circuits in the mouse.
I’d go with the “wierdo mouse” theory and try buying a new mouse (they aren’t exactly expensive).
If it was a bluetooth mouse, id guess some weird spike, but a usb mouse? hrm. is it a really cheapo mouse?
I’d say it was fairly cheap since the company paid for it. The boss only buys the good stuff for himself.
Sounds like a loose connection in the mouse to me. It’s like cheap car radios will buzz right before your cellphone goes off or you get a text.
Do you have a mouse at home you can try at work?
I’m sure I can dig up one somewhere.
Cool.
Try another mouse, see if it’s your computer or the “cheapo” mouse itself. if it’s the mouse, see if they’ll get you a different one or something can be done.
Oh I know it is the mouse. The boss’ idea of how to take care of if was suggest the banning of cell phones at work, like his buddy at some other newspaper does.
that’s just absolutely retarded.
That use to happen with my old computer. When I would get a text I couldn’t move my mouse or type for a few moments, but then it would go back to normal. I also had a computer that would beep right before I got a text message. It never failed to inform me ahead of time. As with your problem of having to unplug it and plug it back in, I have no idea how to help.
