Where is a good quiet place to get my personal work done?

Asked by NoCatharsis (207points) January 6th, 2010

I am referring to work outside of my daily 8–5 job. When I get home, I like to use my personal time to do research, read, or reply to e-mails. The problem is I’ve never been able to work well in my own home environment. I have adult ADHD and there are too many distractions, plus I live with 2 other people. In college, I dealt with this by finding the perfect environment for myself, which was usually a quiet spot in the library or an empty classroom.

Now I’m in the real world, and there are no empty classrooms to camp out. The nearest libraries close at 5 PM most days, and coffee shops: not a chance. I need total silence and no time limits (such as closing times) to really be productive. Where can I find this now outside of college?

You could stay in the office longer and do it there, and you would probably even get brownie points.

What if you shut the door to your room?

You could try getting some noise canceling headphones and wall yourself off in your room. Try explaining this to the others you live with, and see if they let you have your space.

stay after hours, or if your out get yourself a good pair of noise canceling earphones give the local coffee shop or restaurant another try. if you can afford it you can always rent office space if there’s some nearby.

When I was in a similar position, I went around to all of the local IHOPS and Denny’s looking for one with a sectioned-off area that wasn’t being used. I found an IHOP with a night time manager who was willing to let me sit there by myself. Fortunately, it wasn’t anywhere near the other areas in use by patrons, so it was very quiet. All you have to do is order some food and coffee when you first get there. I always left a very good tip, because I was there for hours and they kept my coffee cup full.

(By the way, a lot of libraries are no longer enforcing the silence rule, especially not the ones at universities, so even if you found one that stayed open late, it would potentially be a big, frustrating waste of time.)

I don’t know if this would work for you, but I always go to Barnes&Noble, I get a coffee. bring my headphones and listen to music while I get my work done. It might be too many distraction for you, but usually I go when there is barely anyone in the store.

Some high functioning Autistic people tell me they wear Head Phones when they are in Public. Some use Ear Plugs. They wear head phones that are light weight . Their issues are sensory.
I can relate I sometimes like a quiet place too.
Some listen to Music too.

@pdworkin I usually end up staying in the office after-hours, but that only stays open so long, and they frown on our use of personal e-mails on company computers, even if I’m technically off the clock.

@Marina If I’m at home trying to get things done, I usually will shut the door to my room. Honestly this should work fine, but I think the problem is purely perceived at that point: I just don’t see my room as a workplace, so I tend to be way less productive. This may be something I could fix if I absolutely had to, but I kind of prefer to keep my work and my leisure in separate places.

Concerning some of the other suggestions – I have tried headphones with music, and that works to a degree, but if I’m in a public place I turn into the worst people watcher ever. I need to find a method and a workplace that works for me and go with it, but that’s part of the reason I’m here asking you guys! So thanks, I appreciate it.

You don’t have the campus library now, but what about a public one? That’s where I do all my studying and I love it. They even have computers or places to plug in your own laptop.

Edit: I totally missed your last paragraph where you said your libraries close early… have you googled all the libraries in your area? Maybe it would be worth it to drive a little ways to one that closes later. What about a community center? If you’re in a warm climate area, you could maybe park your car somewhere outdoors and do it there. Or perhaps you’d be best to ask a friend or relative if there’s a time that they could designate a room or section of their house to you.
