What is that emotion once you realize you cannot find your cell phone?

Asked by charliecompany34 (7813points) January 6th, 2010

Suddenly lost, misplaced, even stolen? where did you leave it? what was the last conversation you had before it was missing? were you distracted for some reason? what drama ensues once you lose a vital technological limb?

what is that feeling of losing it compared to?

Panic is the first emotion. It lasts approximately 2 seconds, before passing, giving way to a sudden burst of frantic energy that I usually use to retrace my steps as quickly as possible, even if it includes getting in the car and rushing back to a store, movie theater, or restaurant.

is the term “oooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhh shit” an emotion in verbal form?

Ansible1's avatar

It can be compared to: “Oh crap, did I remember to take the porno out of the VCR?!?”

charliecompany34's avatar

@FlipFlap i agree! thought my cell phone was stolen after a simple conversation. laid it down somewhere and like 7 minutes later realized i didn’t have it. no where to be found. i started texting a reward if found.

Drama? A cell phone? No.

the next thing you think is OH MY GOD—MY WHOLE LIFE is in that cell phone directory!

Frustration, panic, anger, annoyance, freaked out, all at once for me

I think we need to make a ‘new’ emotion, it’d be more of an all encompassing emotion. It’s called…..‘What the fuck’.

One time I had to slam on my brakes & my purse fell to the floor. I picked everything up except my cell, not realizing it. Later that night I wanted it & I couldn’t find it. I looked everywhere. I went nuts. Did I leave it somewhere? Then I remembered the brakes thing. I went out to the car & it had slid under the seat. I was so relieved I almost cried. It’s in my jeans pocket now from morn to night.

i mean, i had a fellow coworker text from his phone to mine. for an entire hour it was missing and i was swearing and kicking over garbage cans. turns out, another coworker had found it and held onto it just to see how i would react. i was not happy.

@blackberry: yes! WTF is the new emotion of the new decade!

@Blackberry
We have that. It’s called confusion.
The patent is no longer pending

@SeventhSense Oh darn, I was going to take this idea to the APA lol. Well I’m glad that’s solved.

aprilsimnel's avatar

Well, no biggie, I just ring myself up! That usually solves the problem. :D

Thank God I pay $7 extra for insurance.

Oh, well. I don’t use it much anyway.

dropped a cell phone after getting out of my truck in the hood to “correct” or discipline my youngest son. called and called but that was a futile attempt. some “hood rat” cuffed my phone super quick.

I stop dead in my tracks and go into panic mode. My little heart feels like it stops momentarily. I spent far too much money on my beloved cellphone and the mere thought of losing it frightens me.

Relief- :). The tracking device has finally left my side.

charliecompany34's avatar

@Chikipi you know what? i have to applaud you on that one. albeit, cell phones are tracking devices. i know people who have gotten rid of them just to be relieved of the frustration of always answering the universal question: “where you at?” dammit, i’m right around the block on the way home. you know where i am!!!

Chikipi's avatar

@charliecompany34 – LOL- I’ve had times where I misplaced it and it sometimes is the best thing that could have happened. My close friends and family do know where to find me if it’s an emergency

Utter gratitude for MobileMe and “Find My iPhone”. Even with the ringer off, I can ring it from the web even when it’s buried in my 3 yr olds doll house

Lorenita's avatar

Like a hole in my heart….and then resignation..and then the phantom limb syndrome..You hear your cell phone ringing everywhere, even though it’s gone.

It sounds like someone died or dumped me.. I know, but geez.. cell phone has become very important, it sucks!!!!! jajajajaajaja!

Fernspider's avatar

@SeventhSense – I sometimes equate money to the hours I have slaved to earn it. It saddens me that I have given up literally weeks of my life in time to save that money only to lose it foolishly (by leaving my phone somewhere).

I must admit that if my dog went missing or was hit my a car, I would be a million trillion times more devastated so loss in one form or another is relative.

chyna's avatar

@Rachienz That is why I get the free phone with the cheap plan. If I lost it, no biggie.

Fernspider's avatar

@chyna – hee hee, I was intending to buy a cheap phone but got sucked into the fancy iphone with their displays and features etc. The boyfriend was not impressed with my purchase LOL.

chyna's avatar

@Rachienz Yeah, it’s real easy to get sucked into those fancy phones. But I’m too thrifty to buy anything like that, even if I could afford one, which I can’t.

davids's avatar

When I think I’ve lost, or have lost, something like a mobile (cell) phone, I generally just think, “Ughhh, that’s inconvenient…” then go about trying to find it or get another if I can’t find it.

LeotCol's avatar

I feel a bit like awh crap then I feel a little squemish. But then I find it. And I feel relief like no other.

But then again another time I was playing football (soccer) and I broke my flip phone in half in a nasty tackle. And I wasn’t bothered at all.

I suppose its only fear when I’m not sure where it is, as it could be in the hands of anyone. But if its broken then I’m fine.

Its more a concern for the information on my phone or the use it could be put to rather than the actual loss of the phone.
