Any suggestions for products to help make traveling with an infant easier?

Asked by Carmella (123points) January 6th, 2010

I’m traveling solo with an 8 week old on an 11 hour flight, and am looking for product suggestions.

I’ve already thought of disposable bibs, changing pads, cheap ’‘disposable’’ bottles, pacifier clips, Bjorn, pacifier wipes, pre-measured formula powder etc… but I’m sure there’s other things that I’ve forgotten or have never even heard of that would help make the trip easier. Suggestions?

Earplugs and sedatives for the people around you. I would ordinarily suggest Benadryl for your child, but eight weeks is probably way too young for that.

Good luck.

A vibrating teether placed under your baby’s knees/seat (or you can hold it under them while you cradle.) can keep them calm. At eight weeks they’ll sleep for most of it. Ear-numbing drops from your doctor can ease their ear discomfort. Hand sanitizer for you. Empty ziploc baggies (just in case).

Sit in the bulkhead! (hopefully the airline will place you there anyway but check) they have pull out cots so you baby lays in front of you.

@Mamradpivo Yep…maybe when he’s older!

@gemiwing Good ideas, just placed them on my travel checklist, thanks!

@trailsillustrated I’ve requested those seats, keeping my fingers and toes crossed :)

Bring lots of patience… even if you have to put some of it in your checked luggage. People, especially in a cramped plane, are ridiculously ungracious when it comes to infants on a plane.

The kid will get the window seat because being in the aisle is a fire hazard.. so that part is at least good.

If you can find a seat that has one of those pull over covers with the calming lights it would likely help keep the baby from being overwhelmed.

If your baby has ever taken decongestants or antihistemines before you might want to give the baby some a couple of hourse before landing. Decending is the worst for people with congestion or ear trouble. I say only if you have medicated your baby previously because you would not want to experiment with a new drug on a flight.

I don’t have children, so I don’t have many suggestions, but I would think bring a blanket/cloth that smells like home. I have been on a lot of long flights with infants, Tokyo, Europe, plus others. I have never had a baby cry for a very long time, so try not to worry. People around you understand that you are limited in what you can do, and your infant is too young to be expected to behave a certain way. My observation is that many times infants want their parent to pick them up and walk around; do it as long as it is safe. Also, let flight attendants help you by holding the baby when you need to use the bathroom, or maybe a passanger next to you can watch him/her, don’t try to juggle the baby in the bathroom.

Valium and a fifth of whiskey… you’ll be out like a light.

Deflatable babies! Just pull the stopper and put the little tyke away for awhile.

When they’re 2 weeks old you could just eat ‘em up, and when they’re 2 years old you wish you had!

Yes, don’t let the other travelers make you feel uncomfortable if your baby fusses. Babies fuss and the adults this aggravates have some growing up to do.
