What songs give off "dark vibes?"?

Asked by EgaoNoGenki (1164points) January 7th, 2010

Can you post us any song that gives off a dark and hostile vibe? What are some great examples you can think of?

Here’s one I know kinda well by now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T90diMwb_Bs

The above song, with words: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGPYrUu7Zhg

Those are what I think are songs with dark vibes. Now, what are your ideas of songs with dark vibes?

There are a few in Phantom of the Opera. The organ playing is super awesome for creepy.

Pretty much anything from Todd Smith. Dude’s got an awesome voice. Some examples from the 5 bands he’s been a part off:

Love Song For a Witch by Dog Fashion Disco
Sweet Insanity by Dog Fashion Disco (Fan Made Video)
Chloroform Girl by Polkadot Cadaver
El Creepo by El Creepo (No Video)
Surrounded by Demons by Knives Out (No Video)
Famine Ghost by the Alter Boys

Secondly I’d look into Mike Patton. Equally disturbing vibes:

Pink Cigarette by Mr. Bungle (Fan Made and Well Done Video)
Retrovertigo by Mr. Bungle (Fan Made and Well Done Video)
We’re Not Alone by Peeping Tom (No Video)
Cradle Song by Tomahawk

And I have to add:

Supertime by Berndsen

Well, not hostile, but sort of dark. Words written by an angel, sung with beelzebub’s voice.

Top of the Hill, by Tom Waits

For some reason, songs by Nirvana, Jeff Buckley and Elliott Smith, although beautiful, seem to give off that dark vibe to me.

Edit: not hostile, but strangely dark…

Riders on the Storm or pretty much anything else by The Doors.

Just about anything written by Jim Morrison. As for classical, listen to Mussorgsky’s “St. Johns Night on the Bare Mountain” or any of Sibelius’ symphonies. Brahms third symhony has some very dark passages, as does a great deal of Beethoven’s piano works of his “middle” period. Ralph Vaughn Williams’ “Sinfonia Antarctica” has a generally dark tone.

I don’t know if I’d call it dark but hostile… “Fucking Hostile” by Pantera from their Vulgar Display of Power album, take your pick from most of Slayer’s stuff, “Head Like a Hole” and “Terrible Lie” by Nine Inch Nails from Pretty Hate Machine, something about “Piggy” and “Hurt” also NIN from All That Could Have Been always felt very dark to me. Most of Sentenced’s “The Funeral Album” is generally dark, “Lost to Apathy” by Dark Tranquility from their Character album is rather dark not so much in tone but in message, “Blackened ” off of Metallica’s And Justice For All, Stabbing Westward has some very dark stuff, The Antlers Hospice album, I could keep going…

Oh just thought of a couple more, made even scarier by the videos! You have to watch the whole thing if you haven’t seen them before!

Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums – A Perfect Circle

Don’t fret precious I’m here.
Step away from the window.
Go back to sleep

Safe from pain and truth and choice and other poison devils,
See, they don’t give a fuck about you, like I do.

I’ll be the one to protect you from your enemies and all your demons
I’ll be the one to protect you from a will to survive and a voice of reason
I’ll be the one to protect you from your enemies and your choices son
They’re one in the same, I must isolate you…
Isolate and save you from yourself …

Actually, Over The Rainbow is dark vibe-ish.
It has a , “do you want some candy little girl?” Vibe. All over it.

Sing Me To Sleep by The Smiths. It’s simultaneously sweet and creepy.

Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath. Darkest. Song. Ever.

Michael_Huntington's avatar

@dalepetrie I was about to say that! But I agree, as well as Into The Void, Symptom of the Universe and Electric Funeral.
Here are my picks
Buried and Forgotten – Hellhammer
Black Magic -Slayer
Funeralopolis -Electric Wizard
Shemhamforash and The Shitagogue – Grand Belial’s Key
The Seven Gates of Hell (venom cover)-Sigh
Woman of dark desires -Bathory
I’ll get even -Megadeth

@Mike_Hunt – yeah, for dark, you can’t go wrong with any Sabbath really, well at least not with any Ozzy era Sabbath.

Based on your tastes, you might like a thrash/death/speed metal band called Rigor Mortis…they only had like 3 albums in the late 80s/early 90s and basically disappeared, though some of their members went on to greater success with other bands.

Michael_Huntington's avatar

@dalepetrie Ah thanks. I remember hearing a song off youtube and liking it. I’ll get more into them. Thanks for the recommendation

dalepetrie's avatar

No problem. I recommend their first, self titled album from like ‘88 or ‘89…if you can find it. It’s long out of print, but the band may have re-released it, and there’s always bittorrent.

I really can’t believe nobody’s mentioned Joy Division yet. Transmission, Shadowplay are 2 that really stick out in my mind. In my opinion, they had some of the darkest music out there.
