When you set something on "auto pilot" for a minute or so, do you stand there watching while it's doing it's thing, or do you fill that time with something else?

Asked by Val123 (12739points) January 7th, 2010

For example, I heat up a cup of coffee and least once during the morning. While it’s heating I’ll wipe off a counter or put some dishes in the dish washer…or, did you know that you can unload 9/10ths of a dishwasher in 60 seconds, without even hurrying? Sure seems a lot longer than that without a timer! I hate housework!

Or, for example, say you’re cooking a big meal, and you have an automatic can opener. When you set the can in it and start it, do you watch the can till it’s open, or do you get started on other things here and there?

Good weird question. I don’t really like Microwaves, but when I do use it, yes I watch it go round, my s/o then makes fun of me and comes and watches it with me!

I do something else while I’m waiting.

I also do not have or like microwaves—but when I do use them (in another person’s house), I get as far away as possible. Even for a minute.

I usually wander off, forget it’s there.. and one of the boys eats/drinks it when I’m at work.

I wipe off the counter, wash a dish or two, etc. I always cover what’s in the microwave, which is not true of other inhabitants of the household. When I take something out, I immediately wash the micowave food cover, and put it back inside the microwave, hoping others will take the hint and cover what they’re cooking.

I only watch things when they might asplode… or if they’re marshmallows. I loooovvvveee to watch marshmallows in the microwave!

Since we both warm up a cup of coffee in the microwave oven, here is a question for you. after heating. my coffee never tastes the same as before the heating. i wonder why?

I do other things. Sometimes I get involved in what I am doing and have to reheat the thing again.

I walk away but make sure I am back in time for the finale.

And, everything starts with 1… 2… 3… As easy as… And straight across.
Anything longer it is totally on its own.

Forty-five seconds is my cut off. If it takes more than that I walk away. Less than that I stand and watch.

I will walk away if its more than a minute, otherwise I will watch, and sometimes hum along, making my own little drone tunes…

I won’t watch the microwave (unless I’m heating something that might boil over or I’m softening butter), but I will often watch something bake in the conventional oven. After I’ve put lots of work into preparing a cake batter or puff pastry dough, it’s exciting to watch it transform in the oven. My wife, a champion multi-tasker, teases me mercilessly for this.

@Dibley Thanks! I’m glad they let it through in this form (it got pushed back for editing…..)

@Harp Oh, that’s funny!

@avvooooooo You love to watch marshmallows esplode in the microwave??? Well, I happen to have some. I’ll check that out, see if it’s that interesting or maybe see if you need to get a life!

I guess my underlying question (which I didn’t want to bust right out with….) is, I wonder if more women take those seconds and do something else, while more men stand at watch…..

@john65pennington,...Uh I never noticed a difference in taste! If I have, like, half a pot left in the morning, I’ll stick it in the fridge and re-heat it the next morning, and I don’t notice any difference in taste. I only know the difference between weak and strong. I’m a loser in the world of Starbucks. :(

@Val123 I just looked at the question and thought I must of misread it the first, pleased I didn’t!

Val123's avatar

Ah, the first question, which got pushed back to editing basically said, “When you’re using the microwave for, say, one minutes, do you stand and watch it go round and round, or do you do other things till it’s done.”..... the detail is the same as above.
Mod said that was better suited to the chat room….every time a question gets modded for that reason it leaves me scratching my head. I mean….I’m “starting a discussion….”, right? Can you explain how a question that’s meant to start a discussion could ever be better “suited” to the chat room?

avvooooooo's avatar

@Val123 They don’t asplode… But they do GROOOOWWWWWW!

Sophief's avatar

@Val123 I happens to me on nearly every single question, I don’t bother editing them anymore. There was nothing wrong with your question, infact it is better than the one you were made to ask.

@Dibley Thanks! I guess there are some things we just weren’t meant to understand!
