Any theories on how or what makes a ouija board work?

Asked by hungertoragejr (266points) January 7th, 2010

I’ve had a ouija board for about a week now, and it doesn’t seem to work. All different kinds of people tell me that the ouija board moves according to your energy… Many other people tell me it is because there are “ghosts” that actually move it. Any different theories as to how this might work?

Your imagination.

I would guess it’s subconscious movements of you and your partners hands.
At least, I hope so. If not I have unleashed mighty evils onto the world. Specifically in my life. Hey, maybe the thing does work as advertised.

People move them. With their hands. Creeeeepyyyy.

Oh, I mean energy and ghosts and scary things. Powerful things, those clumps of cardboard and plastic…~

It doesn’t work.

As to why people think they work, confirmation bias mostly, I’d imagine.

When I was little, it worked great! But when I used it when I was older, it didnt work. I think its all about your imagination. When I was little me and my friend loved thinking there where ghosts around so we were way into it. I think directions say you have to touch that main item really lightly so i’m sure our fingures shook a lot which probably moved it…along with us pretending.

Ideomotor effect.

And an amusing example of it, as well as another.

Oh, also people moving it intentionally. That does the trick.
