How to talk to your parents?

Asked by jessicamarie (199points) January 7th, 2010

My stepdad won’t let me get the new upgraded iTunes, claiming it will make the computer run slower. But i have looked it up and seen my friends’ iTunes and it actually makes iTunes faster…
What should i do? I need it to download videos and movies.

@jessicamarie ; Do you have XP, Vista? When i Tunes prompts for the upgrade and he’s not in the room just click “Yes” and be done with it, it actually uses less resourses.

Not to give you a short answer, but where is your mother in this situation?

Parents are impressed by research, and you seem to have done yours.

What version are you on that won’t let you download videos and movies? It must be AWFULLY old, because all of the versions that I’ve seen for the past two years allow these downloads from the iTunes store…

jessicamarie's avatar

@nope I have no idea…It just always said i need the newest version of iTunes to get movies and tv shows…i can get music videos lol sorry!

jessicamarie's avatar

@frdelrosario I never thought of that ha

@jessicamarie Do you know if you got Windows 7 by upgrading an old operating system (e.g. XP, Vista), or is it a new computer? I ask, because if the computer is new, you would already have a newer version of iTunes (Win 7 has only been out for a few months). If it was an upgrade, then perhaps you have a really old version of iTunes, in which case, the newer version, which is designed to run on newer operating systems, would definitely be faster, not slower. If you do actually have a newer version (check the version when you launch iTunes in the Help-About iTunes in the menu), then you may wish to contact Apple support about it, to see what the problem is.

@jessicamarie , the latest I Tunes will run Fantastic on Win 7, its not like it’s a Trojen Horse.

You have to explain information in a way that boasts the most benefits to the system. For example, Upgrading to the new iTunes will actually improve overall performance of the application and is designed to cause minimum drag on the system. Apple is known for its simple, and resource efficient software.

If you have information that the new system will be better, present him with it. Also, I am not computer savvy, but can’t you uninstall if it does negatively affect the computer? Maybe you can tell your dad that you do not want to slow down the computer either, and if it slows it down you would be happy to uninstall the program. Ask if he is willing to spend 10 minutes with you to try it. If you make him a partner maybe he will be more reasonable, because you are being reasonable.

Is it possible he does not want you to download the other version, because he doesn’t want you to be able download videos and movies? That is a whole diffeent issue.

Tell him the new version of iTunes will create a kind of heaven on earth. Where all are happy, dancing and frolicking about in the fields. There is endless wealth, no war. And perpetual sunshine.

Or just wait until he’s out of the room and hit the update button.

I agree that you should wait til he’s out of the room and do it anyway. If he notices and asks, say it did it automatically or something.

Maybe i should show all of your answers to my stepdad!!!
Now there is an idea

He’s crazy~

It doesn’t harm your computer. Isn’t it basically the same? Except, iTunes LP.

Show him “proof” to support your argument and to show him that you’ve done your research. Explain to him how it would benefit him (if it would).

Ok. He’s saying it will make the COMPUTER slower. Not the iTUNES. He’s going with the idea that the more stuff that is on a computer, the slower it runs.

If you’re going to download a lot more crap with the newer version, making the comptuer run slower… you can see where this goes.

JLeslie's avatar

@avvooooooo Makes sense. I bet you are right. That is why I was wondering if he was just against downloading the videos in actuality and the OP misunderstood his objection. I had not thought of it the way you stated abovem that he thinks the videos will slow the computer, but that he just didn’t maybe want the OP spending time downloading videos. I think your hypothesis makes a lot of sense.

Save up for your own computer. Dorky netbooks start at about $300, a low-end desktop around $600.

jessicamarie's avatar

@JLeslie He is cool with the videos because he knows which ones i want to download…the issue is that he thinks he knows everything and i want to show him how annoying his ignorance is

JLeslie's avatar

My suggestion is don’t go in with the atitude that you want to “show him.” It might come through in your tone that you are annoyed and feel he is an idiot, and it will become a power struggle. Rather include him in discovering the reality on the subject, don’t be combative. You might tell him you were wondering also if it might slow the computer so you did some research and want him to see what you have found, instead of telling him he is wrong and you are right. Make it a partnership if you can.

avvooooooo's avatar

@jessicamarie Its entirely possible he knows more than you do about this.

jessicamarie's avatar

@avvooooooo Yes that is true but i just need to know how to let him know that i am willing to talk about this person to person rather than stepdad to teenager
