Everyone Worth Knowing

“Bette Robinson is a twentysomething Emory graduate who shunned her parents’ hippie ideals in favor of a high-paying yet excruciatingly boring job at a prestigious investment bank. One day, after a particularly condescending exchange with her boss (who sends her daily inspirational e-mails), Bette walks out on her job in a huff. After a few weeks of sleeping late, watching Dr. Phil and entertaining her dog Millington, Bette’s uncle scores her a job at an up-and-coming public relations firm, where her entire job seems to revolve around staying out late partying and providing fodder for clandestine gossip columns. What follows is one episode after another of Bette climbing up the social ladder at the expense of her friends, family, and the one guy who actually seems worth pursuing.”

Fun read!!

One that doesn’t require a lot of thinking as you’ll likely fall asleep or get distracted by other stuff!

Try “On the Beach” by Nevil Shute.

The Beach by Alex Garland
‘THE BEACH is fresh, fast-paced, compulsive and clever – a LORD OF THE FLIES for the Generation X. It has all the makings of a cult classic.’ Nick Hornby

An Italian Affair by Laura Fraser.

The Time Traveler’s Wife…I just read it recently and was surprised to find that it was better than I expected.. it’s engrossing, well written, romantic but not overly trashy, and intelligently crafted…

I think you want to read something smart but not too dense. I’d recommend Zadie Smith (esp. On Beauty) or Michael Chabon (Amazing Adventures of Kavelier and Clay)

I’d also go with Prince of Tides or Beach Music. The Sunday Wife is excellent as well. It’s written by Pat Conroy’s wife, Cassandra King. Setting is the Florida panhandle and it’s excellent. Very poignant and funny.

I would not suggest a book about the prevalence of shark attacks.
