I am currently writing a short story for a local contest. So far, the manuscript has been a hit with my peers, but there is one problem: the first name of the main female character, Kathleen. It apparently doesn’t fit her personality to well. So, I have come up with two alternatives: Auria and Dianna.
Out of Kathleen, Auria and Dianna, which do you think sounds the best, or is most appealing? Why?
(The character in question’s last name is Smist).

Auria
Kathleen seems like a proper person and so does Dianna.
Not too many people would know an Auria so they don’t have a personality type associated with the name.
Smist? Smist? SMIST?
How about Misty Smist?
I like Auria because it’s rare and interesting.
sister Misty Smist
how do you pronounce “Auria”?
Is the story for an American audience? Is the character American?
@JLeslie
It’s actually the story of a foreign water spouting nun. Sister Misty Smist
@Medlang – “Ar-ree-ah” is the most wide spread pronunciation that I know off.
@JLeslie – The book takes place in Western Canada. It’s a historical based (but not strictly based).
@SeventhSense – a foreign water sprout? Sounds like an intriguing creature. ;)
If you have a last name that begins with a soft consonant then I would recommend a first name that ends with a hard one.
I think either first name would work. I think the last name might need a tweak. ‘Smist’ turns whatever is in front of it into a possible possessive of ‘mist’ in my mind.
Auria’s mist, Jenny’s mist etc.
I agree with the general consensus. Auria is a really pretty sounding name. Plus with it being rare, you can create her own persona without people having preexisting expectations or limitations.
Its just that Auria is an unusual name and Dianna I spell with one n, not that it matters, and Kathleen seems like a very typical name. Auria makes me think Aura when I read it fast or Oro, which means gold, I am not thinking it is a woman. I kind of like Kathleen actually with the last name you propose. Are you up for other suggestions? Maybe something similar like Kathryn?
I’ve seen Aria too, and there’d be no question on how to pronounce it.
Is the Smist there for like a pun or something? If not I’d reconsider for the reason @gemiwing stated.
Aria is the name of the new hotel in Vegas.
My vote is Dianna. Auria is a bit too odd sounding for my tastes, and I don’t find Kathleen too appealing either. Just my opinion.
@Spinel you mentioned that Kathleen didn’t seem to fit the personality of your character. Short of giving your plot away, can you tell us a bit about that personality? It’s difficult to say which name best matches without knowing that.
What about AstroAuria? I like that one.
I like Dianna but Astroauria is a close second
Auria
I really like vowel names, not just because my own is.
And it reminds me of a flower, or of a disease, and I like that :)
I think a name starting with a D for that last name. Although, I don’t really like the spelling of ‘diana’ unless it has one ‘n’.
I agree with @daemonelson. Diana would look and sound best with Smist.
Smist is part of an Old Genesis song. “I’m in a Smist again aaaa….
I think @SeventhSense was headed in the right direction.
Make it: misty t sim and no one will know if she is coming or going, forwards or backwards.
See ya…...Gary/wtf
Very clever Gary. I always love those.
I think I like Dianna the most. Kathleen sounds a bit dull, and Auria I think is trying too hard to be different. That’s my opinion.
I’d say Auria because it not a common name and it has a kind of mystery sound to it. Dianna’s nice to but it’s more common. Personally i like Auria better =)
Auria is cool but it sounds like Oreo too much when pronounced.
