My husband’s father is dying. The local family is staying over 24/7. What is the best airfare for Hubby to fly home?

Sorry to hear. I would think most offer a deal? Or, maybe they only have deals for funerals? I would call whatever is non-stop and see what they have. Hopefully, someone else will have more informative info.

Most airlines offer a bereavement fare. Just go to the airport.

Check southwest.

United has flight on travelocity leaving Friday for $148 round trip with a stop over in Los Angeles.

I took the bus between Sacramento and S.D. a while ago. It was pretty fast. I just left at night and woke up in L.A. to transfer. It was about 10 hours total. And I didn’t have to deal with taking off my shoes or having a water bottle. I just got on the bus and we left. And it was pretty cheap. Like 60 bucks round-trip.

Just something to think about if money is a big deal.

@JLeslie Could you give me a link, please, the flights I see are $280 each way.
@Rearbear I called Southwest, and they do not offer bereavement fares, their basic is $170 each way.
@johnpowell Thank for the bus idea, I didn’t even think of that.

Check southwest online! Bereavement fares are outrageous! Southwest used to have an online website that was wonderful fares IF you could fly within the next 12 hours..don’t know if it’s still available or not but I’d try that.

P.S.- I’m sorry about your Dad in law.

Shoot, I just looked back and see I had entered the date a week from Friday. United is $344 total round trip, here is the link http://travel.travelocity.com/flights/AirSearch.do?SEQ=1262934554468082010 It might be a little cheaper if he goes Saturday? Not sure how fast he wants to leave.

The last time we looked into bereavement fares, they were as high as regular fares but had an open return, so you could stay there as long as needed to wrap things up. There doesn’t really seem to be a formal bereavement fare, if there ever was.

I flew Northwest, it is now delta, for my grandmothers funeral and it was way better than any other deal online. Delta would be a longer flight, change in Salt Lake probably. Maybe it would be an hour and half longer than United if the lay-over is fast.

@Darwin Thanks, that is useful to know.
@JLeslie Thanks for the link. We are stuck, because hubby is sick, and can’t go until he recovers. Pops is holding his own tonight, and we are getting updates from family members two or three times a day.

You might try LA and then drive if he will rent a car anyway? Might be more competition and more non-stop flights.

@JLeslie Good idea, it’s $20 less each way, but he won’t need a car because his whole family lives there and there are plenty of cars to go around.
