Do you find yourself feeling a special bond with certain others on Fluther?

Asked by Dr_Lawrence (20019points) January 7th, 2010

I’m not talking about wanting to hook up with someone.

Based on their Questions and Answers, do you come to feel like certain people here on Fluther have come to feel like special people in your life?

Do you ever feel like you would like to know them as real people whose names and ages and life situations matter to you and yours do to them?

Do you ever wish you could talk to them on Skype or the phone?

Is there anything odd or strange about this?

Definitely although I hate to be cliquey. There are some who you just have an affinity for and an ease with. and those with superior intelligence who agree with me

For a handful of awesome jellies: Yes, Absolutely, Yep, and I don’t think it’s odd to grow close with some of the people here, they’re just that good.

Sometimes I see an answer that looks like I could have written it, or I see an artist in disguise. I naturally feel more of a connection to these people because there are more similarities than average.

And yes, meeting some of them out in real world would be entertaining fascinating. :)

Yes, a lot of them. The chatroom helps with this.

Do you ever feel like you would like to know them as real people whose names and ages and life situations matter to you and yours do to them?
Done already.

Do you ever wish you could talk to them on Skype or the phone?
We do have the occasional get together on skype. I have exchanged gifts with others and even shared beers with people I met here.

Is there anything odd or strange about this?
Not really. I have never had a bad experience giving my phone number, AIM, Skype, address, or even meeting people from here. They are actually just normal people.

I like my fellow jellies- some a little more than others.

Most definatly. My girlfriend introducted me to fluther and its nice to see how she answers questions and can pick her brain in an open environment. Also, people who are regulars at responses and questioning are fun to follow because they are so open and interesting.

This is how my daughter met her 4th husband. they kept conversing on another site and discovered that each had a lot in common with each other. they met and dated for a while and the rest is history. there is only one person that i would like to meet in person, just to talk. we seem to have a lot in common.

I absolutely have special bonds with several on here. It’s gone beyond fluther. emails, exchanging pictures, Facebook & phone calls with some. These people are real to me, not just a name & avatar on the screen. There’s some loose cannons on here, but the majority of them, I’d love to meet in person.

I trade PMs regularly with quite a number of jellies, and in some cases we’ve extended communication via email, snail mail, phone/text/skype, etc.. Although I’ve not met any of these people face-to-face, I still consider them friends, and feel I know them fairly well.
See ya…..Gary/wtf

I think if I were more active in the chat room and with PMs, I’d have more people reaching out to me in return. Aside from a bit of back and forth on FB, there hasn’t been much in the way of creating friendships similar to those of my F2F friends for me here. Some of that is on me if I want it to be different.

Only one person was ever mean to me here, and it was a troll who is long gone, so that’s good.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

I’ve also had two people on here be mean to me & they both got banned. HA! NOW who got the last laugh??? jerks

SuperMouse's avatar

Yes, there are some jellies who are special to me.

I met one person on this site so far who I would like to know. He shared a story about himself and his life that touched me deeply. We share an outlook on one of life’s greatest pleasures and I feel a certain kinship for him. I don’t want to be his girlfriend, I don’t want to know where he lives or what he is wearing right now, but I want to learn what he thinks about other issues. I want to know how many other things we have in common because we share this one trait which is a huge part of who I am and how I live my life. Cotton101 you are a very nice man.

Every Jelly on here is special to me! I grew up in Northern Virginia, because of this, unfortunately I am some what of an elitist. So, when it comes to Flutherites I feel as if you only understand us if you are one, so I am very close to my jellies.

Do you ever feel like you would like to know them as real people whose names and ages and life situations matter to you and yours do to them?
I already do!

Do you ever wish you could talk to them on Skype or the phone?
I only talk to one on the phone, he is special. :) Although I talk to a bunch of jellies through facebook, IM, snail mail, skype, oovoo, twitter, etc. You name something I am involved with online, and I could tell you at least 5 jellies that are involved in it too.

Is there anything odd or strange about this?
I don’t find anything odd about this. Fluther is a Q & A site, yes, but one of the things that makes this site so appealing and work so well, is that Andrew, Ben, and Tim understand that it is a community too. With that said there are so many interesting people on here, that are just genuinely good, that I don’t find it odd at all to enjoy keeping in contact with them outside of Fluther.

@Silhouette Cotton? Oh yeah…he’s a keeper.

@jbfletcherfan It appears he has left this site. :(

I’ve felt this way about several members of Fluther since I’ve become a member here and being able to communicate with them on a regular basis has always been and always will be enjoyable for me.

Do you ever feel like you would like to know them as real people whose names and ages and life situations matter to you and yours do to them?
It has already happened and it means a lot to me.

Do you ever wish you could talk to them on Skype or the phone?
This wish has already been granted in few cases and if there was an occasion for it to occur at a later time with others, I would welcome the opportunity.

Is there anything odd or strange about this?
I’ve never been uncomfortable about any of this and I feel like it can be completely natural to grow closer to someone and cultivate long term and meaningful friendships with persons that you interact with on a constant basis, even on the Internet.

fluther is no different for me than real life. I have a bond with the whole thing, with people exchanging themselves in and out, but I have no surviving long term relationships with anyone here. At least, not with people who haven’t ratted me out. I don’t think people particularly care. They say pretty words, but do not follow up with actions.

Yes- Jellies are a special species.

Do you ever feel like you would like to know them as real people whose names and ages and life situations matter to you and yours do to them?

Yes- absolutely! I have met some of the most awesome and selfless people here. More than once Jellies have helped me solve a major issue- and they do not even charge a fee!

Do you ever wish you could talk to them on Skype or the phone?

I actually have. Sometime in chat a skype line is hooked up for fun.

Is there anything odd or strange about this?

No- I do not think so. I feel like my life is better because of all the jellies- even those I do not know as well as others. I really like all jellies. :)

Oh, how did I miss this question??? Yes, done, done, nope. I’ve even met a jelly face-to-face, and plan on meeting a few others as well. If my geographic location wasn’t so far off the beaten path, I’d love to meet many of the people on this site. Still hoping for a Fluther convention someday!

Based on their Questions and Answers, do you come to feel like certain people here on Fluther have come to feel like special people in your life?
I don’t feel like they are. I know they are. Most of the people I consider special to me I’ve come to know due to me practically living in the chat room. There are some very special jellies here. You know who you are, and I love you guys lots.

Do you ever feel like you would like to know them as real people whose names and ages and life situations matter to you and yours do to them?
I already think of them as real people. Their lives already matter to me.

Do you ever wish you could talk to them on Skype or the phone?
I already do!

Is there anything odd or strange about this?
If it’s strange, then I’m strange.
What I like about Fluther is that there is a very strong sense of community here.
And our lovely Fluther Gods know and try to maintain that.
We all try to maintain it, too. It’s just a lovely place.
