Is it time to have a play-off system to decide the National Championship in Division 1 football?

Asked by JJJones (72points) January 8th, 2010

Boise State won their bowl game and Alabama won last night. Both teams are undefeated. Alabama will be number one according the present format.

The NCAA has a play-off system to determine the National Championship in basketball, baseball, and other sports! Why not football?

Is it time to change the format in football?

It’s long past time. But in this case it’s pretty clear who the #1 team should be. Boise State vs. Alabama would look about like Florida vs. Cincinnati looked.

I think that the BCS is enough of a burden. There is not comparison between the schedules of Boise State and Alabama. Look what happened when Florida played Cincinnati, also undefeated.

@Snarp yeah, think that would be true, but remember a couple of years ago, Boise State beat Oklahoma! Have been to most of the home games Alabama played this year and they are a great team, no doubt.

@Marina well, if you had a play-off system, it would allow teams like Florida, LSU, Ohio State, Penn State etc, to have a second chance at beating Alabama.

Would be interesting…

I think a good start would be for each conference to have a decent championship system, like the SEC does. At least then you can match up conference champions and conference runner ups, without really stretching out the season.

@Snarp Lou Holtz has wanted a play-off system for a longtime…cannot remember his format, but it was interesting. Lot of the coaches wanted a play-off system!

@JJJones Just about everybody wants a playoff system except for the ones making lots of money from the current system.
