How do I transfer my Itunes account information and music to my new laptop?

Asked by miketherunner10 (5points) January 8th, 2010

I just bought a new Toshiba laptop and i want to transfer my account information and music library from my old computer to my laptop. I was just wondering what would be the easiest way to go about this without using dics.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Unauthorize your old computer and authorize your new one through iTunes.

@pdworkin :: That only covers part of the question.

@miketherunner10 :: Is iTunes set to organize your music on the old computer? Is everything in /music/iTunes ?

Everything is in Itunes on the old computer. Im not sure if it is organized or how to find out if it is?

You can do something quite nifty with the latest iTunes. If both computers are connected to the same wifi or network there is a sharing option. A little house icon appears when both computers are running iTunes which allows you to drag tracks or entire libraries between computers.

I’m nowhere near my computer at the mo, so I can’t remember the finer details but that is the simplest way.

Another solution I’d consider if you have let iTunes organise your music etc and everything is in one folder on your PC you can transfer the whole folder (however you want to do that, but copying to a portable hard drive is good) it’ll retain all your library information so that playcounts, ratings etc are all retained. Hope that’s helpful.

Copy the first folder in the iTunes or Music hierarchy to the new computer over a network, or a direct connection, or with the assistance of a thumb drive, and then run iTunes on the new computer, select File—-> Add Folder To Library, and click on the top folder. It will create a new library for you, but you will lose your playlists.

If you are using a Mac, and you want to copy your library, there is a program alled Migration assistant that makes things pretty easy. It’s located in your utilities folder (in the finder, click command shift u). Just open it and follow the instructions.

Alternatively, you could open itunes, select file/organize library/consolidate your library and after its finished file/organize library/ upgrade to iTunes media organization. This will take all of your music/movies/whatever on your computer and copy them to the itunes library folder (so obviously you’ll need at least twice as much free space as the size of the itunes collection on your HD to do this), and organize the files into artist/album folders. Once you’ve done that you can then simply drag and drop the itunes folder you just created onto an external drive, which you can then connect to the new computer and drag and drop the itunes folder you just created over the empty itunes folder on your new computer.

If however, you want to MOVE your media to a new mac (as opposed to copying the files) you could install a script on your computer called Groovy Moving (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/24004) and then
start your new mac up in target disk mode (press power button while holding down “t” until the firewire icon appears), connect the computers with a firewire cable, open itunes, select all the songs in your library and run the script. whew. ok. Good Luck.
