Green lentils turning red?

Asked by timothykinney (2743points) January 9th, 2010

I bought some organic green lentils at Central Market. I poured boiling water over them to kick start them soaking. An hour later I checked on them. They were blood red.

Any ideas why or how this happened? Has anyone ever heard of this happening?

a little freaked out

I’ve never heard of “blood-red” as a decription for lentils, but maybe you were sold un-hulled red lentils? they look a bit like dark green lentils until the skins come off. Sorry, but that’s all I can think of.

You’ve embarrassed them, that’s all.

@wonderingwhy‘s answer makes the most sense to me! Did you buy them in bulk? were they labeled green lentils, or did you just go by appearance?
Do they smell or otherwise seem to be bad?
