Do you think Facebook is "so yesterday?"?

Asked by jca (36062points) January 9th, 2010

do you think Facebook has seen it’s day or do you think it’s still one of the main social networking sites to use? i have seen several articles lately that describe it as being “so yesterday.” there was also an article in The New York Times a few months ago that talked about some people closing down their FB accounts due to privacy concerns, and being marketed based upon their “likes.” I still use it and most of my friends do, as well but that doesn’t mean FB is not on a downturn. Wondering what the collective thinks.

It’s not a matter of what I think, it is without question one of the main social networks. That’s not an opinion, that’s a fact.

Not yet. Though, I don’t know what’s in line to replace it.

i have never understood what facebook is for, it just seems like a list of people you know. i don’t really see a use for it. all i ever do on it is play the zynga poker app.

There’s a lot I dislike about it. But so far, it’s the best social networking site out there in my opinion.

To me, its non-existent. I had an account on there for about four weeks, got bored and wished my account to RIP.

Facebook is kind of a craze – like Myspace a few years ago. Something new and better will come along and the masses will immigrant over there. Its already discussed less in the media than last year. However, the service probably has a good enough backbone to maintain a long-term presence.

You want to know why it’s so popular? Look at @poisonedantidote, he doesn’t even understand what it is for and yet he has one.

I still use it to keep in touch with people. I like that they’ve found a (relatively) safe way for people to network online using their real names, because that has actually helped me find some of my old friends and be found. Facebook has some real problems, though. It’s still not profitable yet and they’re facing a lawsuit for selling information about people’s preferences. Do you ever notice how specific their ads are? I go to a lot of gay nightlife and pride events with a few of my friends, and we post on each other’s walls about it. Now all my ads are for lesbian dating services. :-/

@jca The security thing has been upgraded. Personally, I LOVE it. I’m on there all day & am having a ball interacting with friends & family. Just yesterday I hooked up with 2 friends I’d worked with several years ago. I’ll certainly never leave it.

@J0E My sentiments exactly!

Its the games notifications which annoy me.
You can hardly see any stuff from the real world because of the games.
Just wish there was a seperate games wall.

AnonymousWoman's avatar

No, I don’t. I like what @Sandydog suggested about the games having a separate wall. I think it’d be cool to have a wall specifically dedicated to apps as well. It’d also be nice to have something like this in the news feed so that we wouldn’t have to constantly hide everything we don’t like seeing. Then again, will people who can do something about this ever see this thread?

I think face book is “so never”.

I fail to see the point of social networking sites in general though so….

Until something better comes along, facebook will be it. There just isn’t anything else out there with Facebook’s global reach. It will be very hard for any site to beat that, until Google comes up with some kind of feature where you can see updates/pictures/info from your contacts or something. Even twitter has a very different function, with most people (as far as I can tell) using it to follow news or celebrities rather than their friends.

I agree with @fireinthepriory. I think those who use it to maintain connections with friends and family will continue to do so for now, and those who use it because it’s currently trendy will just spend less time on it, and more with twitter or the next fad. Because Facebook has a practical use, not just a fun thing to do.

Do you recall the condition that MySpace became in, before the good people left it? i only hope that the people of Facebook remember this and protect the site thats used by so many good people. we all want and need our security from a site like Facebook. after all, we all converse and send photos of our families there. its called trust. to date, i trust Facebook. i will until something else comes down the highway to change my mind. john

I like to use facebook to share pics with my family. I think it’s a great social networking site.

Oh yeah, @Sandydog !! That would be great. I use Facebook to keep up with various nieces & nephews that I don’t see often. (I also play Bejeweled Blitz…)

I like it for photo sharing and locating people with whom I’ve lost touch.

I have grown weary of the apps.
