Is there a bad musical out there?

Asked by rentluva5256 (555points) January 9th, 2010

I’d like to know if there is any musical that someone thought was completly horrible. (Diseny doesn’t count.)

damn!
I have to say…The Phantom of the Opera
I did not like the songs, and I I did not like how they turned the story into something so….maudlin.

Springtime for Hitler: A Gay Romp With Eva and Adolf at Berchtesgaden

It’s so bad it’s good.

All the musicals I’ve seen so far have been good. I haven’t seen a whole lot of them, though. Just recently saw Wicked with my boyfriend and it was so AWESOME. So I’m not gonna judge something I haven’t seen, despite the fact that there are musicals I’m not interested in, usually rock musicals.

Does anyone remember The Pirate Movie?

I hate to say this, but, I found “Rent” to be boring.

I didn’t love Avenue Q… the songs were reasonably funny, but they weren’t very good musically… I couldn’t listen to that soundtrack more than once.

Caveat: I’m not a big musical fan.

But I was unusually repelled my Le Mis [Using the American punctuation]. And particularly by “Empty Chairs & Empty Tables” Here, I’ll paraphrase the lyrics for you, “Poor me, poor me. Everyone else got killed and I’m alive. Poor me. All those other people got shot and hacked and stabbed and bled out on the street, and I’m sitting here in a cafe in Paris. Oh poor me.” I’m not sure if those are exact, but they are damn close.

Avenue Q was lame, too. The challenge: “How can we wring two hours out of the joke that the puppets are gay” There’s a reason Sesame Street was a kids show.

Seance on a Wet Afternoon by Stephen Schwartz. Technically it’s an opera, but it’s by a guy who composes/writes musicals. It premiered here in Santa Barbara, and there was all this talk of it being amaaazing b/c it was by the guy who wrote “Oz”. Don’t be fooled; it’s too long, incredibly boring, and has a twisted plot line. It sucks!

Oh! CATS!! No one likes Cats.

I loved Les Mis, but if you’re not into classical/operatic music it won’t be for you.

(Must say, the best for me was “Young Frankenstein”. I got to see it in NYC, last year. Andrea Martin was Frau Blücher. Hilarious! She stole the show).

@DominicX That is a joke in another musical called “The Producers.” Just saying.

The absolute worst musicals usually die a quick death during out-of-town tryouts or after a few weeks on Broadway when wither the reviews suck or the box office receipts are poor. They usually have to last for awhile before they’re bought by Hollywood to be turned into movies. It makes it difficult to come up with names most of us have been exposed to.

That said, I don’t love Jaques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris. Review musicals need to be a bit more accessible for me to think they’re worth spending an evening on.

(My fave is Dirty Rotten Scoundrels – I saw it in 2005, with the original cast, and even after overplaying it for years I still love to listen to it and sing along at the top of my lungs – I did that this morning! The jokes are still hysterical and the music is great.)

They’re pretty easy to spot, just look for the words “Lloyd” and “Webber” attached to the credits….

@ucme Must agree with ucme, Mama Mia (movie) was terrible. I am in NYC now, and staying away from the play as well—although I don’t know if that is as bad—but I am not going to take a chance.

Fela on Broadway right now is great.

I’m not a big fan of any musical that’s country. Oklahoma! and Annie, Get You Gun seemed good the first time I saw them, but later I realized how annoying the music was.
