My Peugeot 106 is overrevving on initial start and when idle - is it the idle control valve or automatic choke?

If it doesn’t settle down when it warms up, it’s less likely to be the choke.
The revs generally stay high all the time, but fluctuates when idle.
I’d see what happens when you lower the idle.
It sounds as if it is idling too fast or running too rich, although I know shit about French cars.

How is your fuel economy? If it is bad, then it is probably a choke problem. If it is okay, then the problem is only when you are idling, so you would need to adjust the idle speed.
My brother’s car (not a Peugeot) had a problem with the choke which also made it idle fast. The choke in his car is turned off when the water reaches a certain temperature, but because the pipe was clogged it never turned off.
When did this problem start? Was it associated with any particular event?
Last time I had that issue, it was on my ‘87 Corolla after I accidentally misadjusted the cold-idle on the carb.
FYI, a 4A-LC engine is not supposed to idle at 5000 RPM :P
Fuel seems ok I think, but I don’t drive that much. The revs generally stay high all the time, and it does seem that the choke never turns off. I cannot pinpoint it with an event in particular, I noticed it after I replaced the exhaust box (the loud exhaust must have disguised the sound of the overrevving).
Which pipe will be blocked?
I can’t really tell you which pipe it will be, I’m not familiar with the choke mechanisms on Peugeots. My brother’s car is a Mitsubishi, so it would be completely different. It probably won’t be doing much damage, so just mention it to the mechanic next time you take it in for a service.
I usually service my car, so think I will try and investigate myself lol, well at least until the point when I realise that I cannot do it!
