Question about N64 Gameshark?

What is it? I mean I know its a device that has cheats on it for certain games but what games does it work for..? and are there different models of gameshark or just one?? I have many questions about this, but I just need to know if its worth the purchase since I wanted to get one for my N64 to experience my old games in a new light

I guess the best thing to do would buy the newest edition. Since it would most likely have more games on it. There may be some games that don’t have cheats for them. Just google something like gameshark game list.
