Tips on getting rubber cement out of fabric?
A couple weeks ago I made the unfortunate mistake of spilling an entire bottle of rubber cement in my purse. Most of the items inside were salvaged, luckily, but the largest problem is that much of the rubber cement has been absorbed into the fabric of my purse and wallet.
Anyone have any tips? I’ve tried rubbing it away with my fingers but it’s not doing very much. I don’t really care if the fabric gets stained, I just can’t stand the smell!

Did it actually soak into the fabric or is it just sitting on top? If only on top a pencil eraser will pick up rubber cement or there is a sponge like thing you can buy at an art supply store that again will pick it up. If it has soaked in you will need some Bestine rubber cement thinner, you can get that at the art supply store as well.
When life gives you lemons ,,,make lemonade
Look at it this way !! Now you waterproof your purse !!
Maybe nail polish remover with Acetone. Just looked online. Not sure what it would do to the fabric though – and that’s pretty smelly in and of itself. But I think the smell of the remover would dissipate after a while, or you could cover it up with a Febreze or something.
PERFECT ANSWER ALERT:
@rooeytoo has answered the original question perfectly. Bestine is the product that the rubber-cement company manufactures for exactly this purpose (spilled rubber cement in purses).
@autumn43 has answered the subsidiary question, how about that hideous smell from the Bestine itself? Ans: leave the purse outdoors, open, not where little kids or animals can get too close to it (those fumes are deadly poison), and wait. It’ll disperse with time.
Scrape up as much of the wet rubber cement as you can then With a dry paper towel, blot up apply some rubbing alcohol to a new paper towel.
