Can you give me some advice?

Asked by newbee (272points) January 10th, 2010

This is my first time on one of these sites. I found it by accident while playing on Google. What advice can you give me about being a member here?

read the terms of service and try to spell things properly. give serious answers before joke answers to avoid moderation and try and get on with people as best you can.

thats about it. welcome.

@poisonedantidote Wow, sounds like serious business here. I guess this might not be for me, I’m very lighthearted and like to have fun. If you can’t joke around a little bit without moderation, what’s the use? With the graphice you have here, it looked like a fun place Thanks for the answer though.

@newbee you can joke around, just i think the mods like it if you give a serious answer first, then joke around.

@poisonedantidote Ok thanks, that makes a bit of a difference.

Please be respectful to all members and have an open mind. This can be a very useful (and fun) site if you use it properly and respect all forms of answers and opinions.

@Tenpinmaster thank you I will do that.

There’s definately scope for light hearted banter here, as has been said before, respect for others, answering the question asked appropriately, good grammar, some thought behind an answer rather than one word, and you’ll be fine.
It can seem a little serious at first but once you get to know some of the guys and girls here you’ll be pleased how friendly they are! (mostly)

@scotsbloke So you are open to new members here? That’s good. I didn’t know if I’d be accepted or not.

Welcome, @newbee. You’ve made a good start. Take a little time to get acquainted with the culture. We do love to play, and we don’t get moderated for joking. We get moderated for transgressing against the guidelines, which could include inappropriate joking. Some of the classic threads on this site are good examples of the kind of humor we go in for.

@newbee I’m a relative newcomer here myself. Still finding my feet so to speak. Best thing to do is give it a chance, get involved, have a look through the questions on the site and see where you can make a contribution. I’m sure you’ll enjoy your time here.

welcome @newbee I have been a member for only about 12months but have become quite a fan, the secret is just to be honest and say what you feel, whilst remembering to be courtious when the occassion arises. I am terrible at typing and often make simple mistakes, but the mods are pretty tolerant!
Your question is a good one, as it asks for advice and here at fluther most members are very helpful! You will soon get to know who to listen to and who to avoid!!

Most of all have fun and enjoy the great community spirit that is fluther!! :)

I was on Answerbag for five years, until they changed the format into something no one wanted, so i am new here, also. Fluther is a good site. its monitored by real, live people for content and accuracy in your questions and answers. i personally like this. it keeps the trash in the trash cans, as i have said before. you will only be allowed about 3 questions in a 12 hour period, so make each one count. sometimes, you are allowed more, if traffic permits. Fluther is a classy site, much better than Answerbag. it will take you a while to learn to motivate throughout the site. once you are familiar with Fluther, you will like it and the people here. do not feel offended if a moderator deletes one of your answers or questions. it may be something they feel is inappropriate for the site. it happens to me all the time. i like the “watchdog” concept of Fluther. welcome aboard! find you a dictionary and ask away. john.

@john65pennington Thank you. It’s good to know I’m not the only new person here.

@newbee We are constantly getting new people; we love ‘em. Welcome to Fluther!

OMG, @newbee Stop being so damn polite! Just beat your chest exclaiming, “I am newbee. Hear me ROOOOOAAAAAAARRRR!!!”

Seriously. We don’t bite (very much). If you’re funny, all the better. Just don’t be funny until two or three answers are already up. After that, fun away! Silliness is something I would welcome, too (you’re right, people tend to be far too serious—although most would probably be surprised to hear me say it).

One thing worries me, though. If you stick around, you won’t be a newbie forever. But you’re stuck with your name forever! Well, maybe you’ll perpetually be getting newbie advice. Good luck! And welcome!

@daloon Actually Newbee is a nickname my niece gave me. For some reason she started calling me Aunt Newbee. The other kids followed suit, It stuck and I kinda like. Thanks

wundayatta's avatar

@newbee There must be a bit of satisfying detail behind that story. Surely there’s more about why your niece endowed you with such a moniker?

newbee's avatar

@daloon She had problems wit R’s when she was little and couldn’t say Ruby. Guess it could have been worse, She could have said it with a B instead of an N.

sakura's avatar

@newbee that’s so sweet, what a lurverly nickname!

newbee's avatar

@sakura Thanks. I’ve had it for about 15 years now. She still calls me that.
