What's a good beach to go to in Florida?
My girlfriend and I are going to Florida in May. We’re going to spend a few days at a beach before driving to Orlando for the rest of the vacation. I’ve been to Florida a few times myself, and am experienced with Cocoa (though that was some years ago), Mexico and Mexico City beaches. Any advice/opinions/experiences about a good beach to go to would be greatly appreciated. Basically we’re looking for decent to great condition (aka not a dirty beach), not TOO ridiculously busy (in fact having the beach to ourselves would be nice, but I’m realistic at the chances), cheap/decent hotels/food available, and lastly either north of Orlando, or not more than a few hours from Orlando. Gulf OR Ocean side are equally acceptible.
Thanks a bunch!

Cocoa Beach and my absolute favorite, Siesta Key Beach .
Siesta has super soft sand, wonderful water and is just overall an amazing beach!
Go to the Sebastian Inlet.
The one with that big ocean on it westy. HEY YOU ASS!!! YOU NEVER RETURNED MY TEXT!!!
I love, love, love St. Pete Beach! Go to Crabby Bill’s and eat on the upper deck then hit the beach.!!!! and, it’s just about 2 hours from Orlando and you are very close to Tampa for a little nightlife. You also have the Salvadore Dali museum very close and the Don Cesar is a great place to stay.
New Smryna Beach, it is where the local people go. Close to Daytona and not as crowded.
Caladesi Island and Homenymoon Island State Park in my town of Dunedin (just north of Clearwater) are consistently rated some of the best beaches in the US. Not too crowded, good walking, beautiful Gulf sunsets. Dunedin has a cutesy downtown, much less built up than Clearwater and could be a fun place to stay.
It depends on how much beach life you like. My favorite beach is at Ft. DeSoto County Park in St. Petersburg Beach. It is miles and miles of empty beach. It was named Top Beach for 2009.
@Marina shhh, you can’t just go telling anybody about Ft. DeSoto. Next thing you know it will be overrun.
@Snarp Oops, sorry you are right!
When I lived in Otown, we went to Cocoa to skim board a few times a week… and New Smryna to chill out on the weekends. Both were great, I’d say New Smryna is quieter, but this was a few years ago… If you’re willing to drive south, Del Ray is where I always went when I was younger but it’s a good 3 hour drive from Orlando, and is often busy on the weekends.
