Can you use a burr coffee grinder to grind less coffee than the minimum capacity?

Asked by Qingu (21185points) January 11th, 2010

I have a new fancy burr coffee grinder that I have not yet opened. It says it has a capacity of 4 – 32 cups. Problem is, I rarely make more than 2 cups of coffee at a time.

And so, I don’t want to open this thing until I’m sure I can just grind a few tablespoons of coffee at a time. Can I?

If you don’t consume that much coffee, I would say don’t open it . . . trade it in for a smaller unit. You’ll just be wasting beans if you’re grinding for 2 cups at a time…

My guess is that the minimum “capacity” is probably just the minimum run time you can set on the timer. My burr grinder has a dial to set the number of cups (which is actually just a timer), then an activation button that starts the grind. If yours is the same, you’d have to either only load in the amount of beans you’d need for your smaller dose, or interupt the cycle by unplugging the grinder halfway through its 4 cup grind.
