I’ve currently got an iPhone but fancy a change – or should I just wait for the 4th gen iPhone?

i wanted an iphone but the plans you have to have cost waaayyyyy to much.
I love my Palm Pre. I’m a mobile phone interface designer and I think the Palm Pre has one of the best interfaces I’ve ever seen. A little bit of flash, a lot of usability and innovation. I like it much better than the iphone I’d owned momentarily (before it was stolen and AT&T offered to charge me an arm and a leg for a new 2-yr-plan with a new iphone).
Sprint also has great data coverage and great speeds (though I know the Pre is becoming available on other carriers as well).
The only downside is the range and quanitity of the apps to-date leave a lot to be desired. Old Palm apps will work, but will look and feel crappy and require a paid app to model the old OS in order to access them.
I reckon you’re wanting to switch as wireless provider as well. Iphone on the AT&T network and Palm Pre on Sprint now or on Verizon later this quarter.
I say, you should check coverage in your area and weigh the costs involved. Personally, I use a BlackBerry but given the choice between iPhone and Palm Pre . . . I would be at a loss.
Thanks – but I’m in the UK so network/coverage different to you guys anyway. My
main hesitation is that I’ve got a Mac and the iPhone works so well with the Mac… Also, not sure what Apple have in store for new iPhone – anyone got a heads up on this?
I would argue that WebOS (Palm Pre) is the best mobile phone operating system. It’s really easy to run multiple apps. Also, Sprint is a very underrated carrier. But the big difference lies in the app stores. Palm has a small (but growing) app store wheras Apple has gigantic one.
I would wait until you see what the next iphone is before you decide. I like Palm (I had Palm pilots all through the nineties) and am quite tempted by the Pre. But the lack of developer support (which is a bit sad considering how many “apps” you could get for older palms), the dodgy and possibly illegal itunes hack, and the limited memory put me off.
I personally would get the iPhone, I don’t remember life without it, but there is supposed to be a new iPhone out later this year.
Your call.

Now that you’ve mentioned that, I now tend to believe that a bias against Palm exist . . .
palm pre, just because of this.
