What is the important part of your dash?

Asked by mowens (8403points) January 11th, 2010

You’re life, at the end will be summed up by one sentence, and 2 dates.

What do you want your dash to mean?

If I were to die right now, my tombstone would read:

1983 – 2010.

It is how I have lived that is important. How I have treated other people, what I have done to give back to the community and the planet.

I like the one W.C. Fields once proposed for himself but never used:

I’m reminded suddenly of the Oregon trail. What did yours say, Mowens?

When my Mom was in the hospital dying of cancer, about a month before she died, she talked to one of the nurses there about her kids. The nurse that she talked to was an old friend’s sister. About three months after my Mom had died, this nurse (Sara) sent me a message through Facebook. And, this is what she said:

She loved you all very much, I hope I didn’t upset you but, I wanted to let you know of all the kind things that she said about you.

“She said that you have a flare for life and that you are “dancer and a dreamer”. Your soul is flavorful, and that you have one of the biggest hearts of anyone that she knew. She wanted you to be happy, no matter what path you took, and knew that eventually you would get there; that you were smart.”

Pretty amazing getting to hear that after she had past. Who knows you better than your Mama..

So, I guess “She was a dancer and a dreamer with a flavorful soul and a beautiful heart..”

My stone aleady exists (a double grave), only the final date missing. Below that reads “her loving husband”.

@RocketSquid and I played Oregon Trail on the Apple IIGS as children. Years later, I logged onto it and played it just for fun. You could pass your tombstone of the last time you played, and you wrote your own epitaph. Mine, that I wrote as a child, read: “Here lies Mowens, he was a hookers man.”

@mowens Best epitaph ever written by a first grader.
