I don’t know the first year, but a friend of mine was part of the Litton family and one of the Littons was instrumental in the development of the microwave oven. She remembers her mother having to cook Thanksgiving dinners in a huge microwave. This must have been in the early 60’s.
I don’t remember this, probably because they were introduced as Radaranges (which appears to be a brand name) in 1954. Thanks, google!
If memory serves Radar Ranges was a brand that had nothing to do with Microwaves. I’ll have to look that up.
Edit: Well, I was wrong (first time this year!) according to Google:The first microwave oven for commercial purposes (ships and hotels) was introduced in 1947 by Raytheon, and named the Radar Range. ...
I don’t know about brand name being the only thing, but I can CLEARLY remember the commercial that said something about an Amana Radarange. And yet, I can’t remember where the hell I put my keys.
I just threw my microwave out and it was exhilarating!
Shoot, I’m so old I remember cooking in a wood stove.
You think you’re old, @Austinlad. I remember one of my neighbors discovering fire!
dang, i dont think i have ever heard them called that ever.
@ShoulderPadQueen I am betting you are under 30. As for the Radar Range it was indeed a brand name that became generic for a microwave oven.
