When is the appropriate time to take down Christmas decorations?

Asked by Mrs_Rose (170points) January 11th, 2010

It’s been just over 2 weeks since Christmas and many houses in my area still have their decorations up. I KNOW it’s been cold, but I still took mine down after New Year’s. How long do you think it’s okay to leave santa standing in your yard?

Hey, thanks, you reminded me to plug in my Christmas lights!

Maybe Groundhog Day?

Well, 12 days is certainly appropriate if you’re a practicing Christian, and it’s only been, what, 15? 16? I’d say they have a few more days of wiggle room before it’s totally ridiculous. :)

Looking out the window I see three other places with lights. I just have to outlast them.

New years day is when I always take mine down.
@jaytkay Just leave yours up all year. That will outlast them.

I always take them down on New Year’s Day.

@jaytkay Do you, or do you know anyone who DOES leave them up all year? When I was a kid there was at least one house near mine that left the lights up all year… just not always lit up.

we take ours down after the first of the year.

I always heard that it was bad luck to have your tree up after the new year. I guess the same would apply to the other decorations.

The time is now.

Actually, to be fair, my family tends to leave their decorations up for over a month after Christmas… And even then, the lights stay nailed to the outside of the house for years.

Sure. I think the outdoor white ones are great for parties all year. Mine are indoor and multicolored, so gimme a couple more weeks to enjoy.

Usually Epiphany. More or less.

I think the tree and all decorations should be packed away by Jan. 2. I knew a couple once who kept their tree up till March!!! I always felt that ruined Christmas a little for their kids because it dragged the “magic” out too long.

The weekend before last.

Perhaps when it is done snowing? Or at least a couple of weeks after New Year’s. Just don’t have christmas lights up when there are trick-or-treaters on your porch lol

I don’t usually do outdoor lights, & aim to take down indoor decorations/tree on or about Jan. 6. Although I admit it didn’t happen till the 10th this year. And they’re still not completely put back in storage… ah well, can’t rush into these things.

I usually take mine down on the 1st, but there’s one house in town that leaves theirs up until April (you should see the brown pine tree they throw out, it’s UGLY!). Some people leave theirs up for Russian Christmas (which I think just passed).

January 6th is Epiphany and the day some consider the last day of Christmas. Any longer than that is rude and/ or lazy.

This year I had most everything away except the tree New Year’s weekend. The tree finally went down the middle of that week. I’d usually put everything away asap, but I’m especially lazy because of this bun in the oven this year.

I’d say at the end of December. One time my grandmother did’nt take her decorations down for 2 years.
