Can emergency contraceptive pill cause a delayed period?

Asked by snowflake (1points) January 12th, 2010

I took the emergency contraceptive pill which induced an early period a few days after taking it (period was early by a week). However I am now 11 days late on my next period. I have been feeling very moody, crampy, and bloated. A home pregnancy test result was negative (taken about 4 days ago). Is this normal and is there a possibility that the preg. test is wrong after so long?

“Emergency contraceptive pills can also disrupt a woman’s menstrual cycle. After ingesting the pills, a woman’s next menstrual period may come sooner or later than its normal schedule. In addition, the flow of menstrual blood may be heavier or lighter than normal. Women may also experience spotting before their next period.”

Thank you for your post. However, it describes the first period after taking the pill. It’s been 40 days since that first period which was induced by the E.C. Pill…

@snowflake I think it means that your cycle can be messed up for a while. If you read the whole article, one of the other side effects is spotting, which could have been what you experienced as the early period.

Have you had unprotected sex in the last 3 weeks?

Marina is right. MAP contains a high dose of hormones and can disrupt your cycle for quite some time (up to three cycles, if I remember correctly).

Of course, whether you’re pregnant or not depends on a number of factors. First, did you take the pill within 120 hours of unprotected intercourse? Have you had unprotected sex since then?

at best, ECP is about 80% effective, when taken very soon after unprotected sex. But the OP said she she took it more than a month ago and recent pregnancy tests negative, so if she’s pregnant, it happened more recently. If home tests are done correctly and on first morning concentrated urine, they usually turn positive within 2 weeks of conception. that’s why I asked about the last 3 weeks, just to give a little wider window for error
