How do you get the smell of smoke out of your house and off your furniture?

Asked by TLRobinson (2375points) January 12th, 2010 from iPhone

I started a log fire in my fireplace and assumed the vent was open(don’t ask why I assumed). Well, it was closed and smoke has bellowed into all parts of my home. This happened Saturday night and it’s still smells?

What to do?

I’ve always relied on opening the windows (tough to do in winter) and a healthy dose of fabreez (sp?) whose smell evaporates fairly quickly. Keeping airflow going with fans should help too. It can spread the smell but it lessens it in any particular area and helps pull fresh air through the fabric/carpet. Keep the air cycling in your house too to filter out as much as you can. Ozium also worked well in college for those “quick! out the window” moments… but I have a tough time finding it nowadays.

Get oust for the sir.

Clean the walls with 409 or something similar.

Use Febreeze on the fabrics. (furniture)

Use a carpet shampooer on the rugs.

As soon as the weather permits, air out the house.

Ditto @wonderingwhy on the Ozium. You can often find it at places like AutoZone.

If the smoky smell turns out to be deeply embedded, you could consider renting an ozone generator. Be aware that this is somewhat controversial – high levels can cause coughing and wheezing, especially if you try to go about your daily life with it running. Best use is probably to seal the windows and doors, remove people and animals and maybe even house plants do a few hours treatment, then open the space up and air it out thoroughly before settling back in.

Some furniture can be cleaned with Woolite, then febreezed. Open your windows as much as possible. Wash your curtains and pillow covers.

As a last resort, you can rent an ozone machine. The extra oxygen molecules combine with the odor molecules.

I’ve never rented one, but I’ve heard about this from carpet installation and cleaning pros.

If you have central air, replace the filter with ones that contain Activated Charcoal then run the air handler unit (or switch on the Fan only). . . Wipe down smooth surfaces with white vinegar and sprinkle furniture with baking soda then vacuum later.
