Which book will I enjoy reading the most?

Asked by tokijitza (56points) January 12th, 2010

For school I need to read one of these books and I’m not sure which one is better and more interesting. This is another set.

The Yearling by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings
Lord of the Flies by author William Golding
A Tale of Two Cities (1859) by Charles Dickens
A Separate Peace by John Knowles
Animal Farm by George Orwell

So what do you guys think? Which one will get me my attention more. I’m in 8th grade. THANKS:)
Please give me your opinion on the books.

Lord of the Flies

You should read them all and then tell us which one you enjoyed the most. Those books are all classics.

8th grade and you’re reading Tale of Two Cities? Well, Dickens is classic, but his writing style can be very dense.

Yeah, I’d agree with @Lightlyseared that Lord of the Flies is great. It’s a pretty dark book though, so be warned.
Animal Farm is also good…
But basically, all of them are books you want to have read by the time you graduate high school. :)

I ahve read all of these books and in my opinion The Yearling was the best. It made me cry.

Animal Farm or A Tale of Two Cities would be my choice.

You have to pick one of those and leave out the rest? Sheesh.

Unless you are really a serious nature lover, The Yearling is a bit boring and sentimental. I’m a Floridian and a nature lover, and I enjoyed it when I read it in sixth grade, but it’s the first one I’d drop from the list.

Lord of the Flies – A true classic, you need to read it at some point in your life. Story of how a bunch of children stranded on an island naturally develop a very unpleasant society. Is it really the story of children being jerks, or does it say something about adult societies? Pretty high on the list.

A Tale of Two Cities – I’m a huge Dickens fan, and so this would be my top choice, but probably not yours. It takes some work to wade through, maybe read it later in life. The story of how the French Revolution affects some ordinary people. Injustice, poverty, all the stuff Dickens is known for.

A Separate Peace – Don’t know this one.

Animal Farm – Probably the best choice. It’s short, has relatively modern language, and definitely grabs and holds your attention. While it is basically about post communist revolution Russia, the story has a lot to say about any cult of personality as well as the way revolutionary governments in general often work. You should be able to find modern parallels to the events. Go with this one if you have no good reason to pick one of the others.

A Tale of Two Cities. The Yearling is really sad. Lord of the Flies is really gross. Animal Farm is kind of simplistic.

I would go with Lord of the Flies as my first choice. It is a great read and has some pretty important societal lessons buried in there. My second choice would be Animal Farm. For pretty much the same reasons.

I loved Lord of the Flies, though it is dark. Animal Farm was an easy read, and fairly interesting.

I’ve read them all. They’re all well worth reading, but I had the best time reading A Separate Peace. A lot of the other stories on your list have a greater scope- they deal with big themes or epic storylines. I enjoyed A Separate Peace because it’s a more personal coming-of-age story and you get a more intimate look at the main characters. It has a big emotional impact.

Lord of the Flies first, you still need to read all of them.

@Snarp A Separate Peace is about a man who goes to an old tree and recalls his time at a boys boarding school up north. It takes place in a time of war and the main idea is how the main character’s so called best friend (who is extremely athletic and aggressive when it comes to sports) becomes injured because the main character ‘accidentally’ pushed him off. The best friend, finny, creates his own separate peace by deleting war and pain from his head- he just focuses on the main characters athletic abilities, trying to live his life through him. It’s a simplistic, deep book.

I like A Separate Peace. I’d read it if I had it right now.
