Why is my TV doing this (see details)?

Asked by SamIAm (8703points) January 12th, 2010

Occasionally my TV will go silent and this little blue box on the top right of the screen will pop up and say “HDMI 2” and “720p dmi” (I may have made up the “dmi”) or something like that. Why is this happening? Is this my TV or cable provider? It seems to be happening more on this one specific channel but I’m thinking maybe a cable is loose?

It’s a brand new 32” Dynex flat screen HD TV. What’s the deal?

Wish I could tell you more, but this has happened to me when I set up a new TV set, and trust me, there’s nothing wrong with your TV; I think it’s just the way you have it cabled. Other Flutherites will have more info, but don’t worry… it’s fixable.

I’m anxious to see the answer to this… mine does this too!

Mine does the same thing when I change from one station to another. It seems to be caused by going from 480i to 720p to 1080i, or any change in resolution. It will effect you if you change regular digital to HD or the reverse. The cable hook up I have is Time Warner cable box to the TV using HDMI cable.

sounds like a loose or dying hdmi cable or jack, or your cable company is changing the definition of the station you’re watching.

Tropical Willie (great moniker) is absolutely correct. It’s a function of HDTV. Each station broadcasts different programs in different resolutions, and your TV is simply adjusting itself to each change. Perfectly normal.

It (your TV) is scanning each channel. There are various ways that the signal can be transmitted. Now that we are digital and now that we ARE digital one of the things you will see is that signal type also displayed with the channel number.

Because your TV hates you.
