Is there anything you could do when you were a child that you can't do it anymore now?

Asked by Your_Majesty (8238points) January 13th, 2010

Ah…the memory….
You must have something in your childhood that you really miss because you can’t do it anymore now for some reason, what would it be?,for what reason?. Please share your story, experience, tears and joy(if you want).

I can’t run nearly as far as I used to be able to because my knees are showing their age. It frustrates me because I really like to run middle distances (3 to 5 miles) at a time and I just can’t sustain this any longer.

Of course, I didn’t run this much when I was a child but I did run this much when I was younger so I’m kind of adapting this answer to that perspective.

Ride roller coasters, drink milk, climb trees, jump off of roofs, sleep all night. For some reason, as I’ve aged, I’ve lost the ability to enjoy roller coasters, and I’ve become lactose intolerant. I used to love warm chocolate chip cookies and big glass of milk. I’ve lost my flexibility and equilibrium as well. Sleeping through the night went with having children.

I can’t do a split any more. This makes me sad as I could do one until I was about 30-ish.

A cartwheel.

Running, jumping, bending, singing without warbling, smiling without wrinkling, eating without getting fat.

Nap. If I take a nap now I wake up with a horrible headache and am a grouch the size of Montana.

Fit in the pots and pans cabinet.

Ya know, I might still be able to get in there. I’m only 5’1 lol. I’d go try right now if this one didn’t have that shelf thing in it

I can’t really climb in climbing frames any more. They’re too small for me now and people would look at me funny.
Now I have to settle for dashing up and down stairs and leaping over fences to live up to my genetic heritage as a primate.

Cry to get my way. I’m young compared to the rest of these answers apparently, I can still do active things lol.

Climb trees. I used to climb up into the crotch of one old oak tree with a book and sit and read there for hours.

willbrawn's avatar

I can’t run around in my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles jump suit playing outside all day any longer. We’ll atleast if I did do that my wife would question my judgement.

My voice has changed as I’ve gotten older. I used to be able to hit much higher notes, but now I sing in the alto or tenor range.

Rolling down grassy hillsides.

I really miss the feeling I got from climbing trees. I had several trees I liked to climb and just sit in, and there was one group of three trees that were close enough together that I could climb from one to the other without climbing down. I loved imagining I was a monkey. Now I am an old dog.

It’s not about things I’ve done when I was a child and now I can’t do them anymore. I just want to be a child again, because those times didn’t care of nothing, made all the things I wanted, innocent of course, even my parents always argued with me about that. But still I want to be a child again. :D

I can’t hide under the kitchen sink anymore or eat 4 packs of Necco wafers in one sitting.

erichw1504's avatar

I can’t fit inside that little red and yellow, foot powered vehicle anymore.

Cry. The kids don’t know how lucky they are…to have nobody judging them when they release and burst out in emotion. Society expects so many silly things from us nowadays…

stump's avatar

Wonder. When I was little, I felt wonder much more than I do now. The world seemed wonderfully complex. Now it just seems baffling. Or maybe I am just having a down day.

chian's avatar

i was fearless, like i guess most small children… I was never afraid of heights, now I am…other than that i try to do most things so i still have the child in me!

@caruss i cant agree with you more…..

My mom started me swimming as a baby which began my love of water. By the age of 9–10 I was able to do an advanced swimming class. It was in this class during a breath holding exercise that I broke the pools record for longest time under water, I think it was around 4min 30 something seconds.

By the time I was 13 I had traded my speedos for skateboards. Now nearly 20 years later (1 or 2 of those years smoking) I would be dead or passed out if I stayed under water for 4min.

Ride a bike. I’ve told on here before of my accident that happened a couple years ago. Kind of put me off of it. I used to live on a bike. Age & lack of agility has taken its toll. :-(

Hand stands, head stands, touching my toes from a standing position, face getting on a plane, bend my thumbs back to touch the inside of my wrists, swim 50 laps in a pool, downhill ski, play tennis.

Things I can do; take care of and love a cat, use a computer, finally use my digital camera and upload the pictures, build a fire in my wood-burning stove, haul recyclables to the dump, ignore bad hair days, examine my life without wincing, write a complete and clear sentence and make bad puns (Baudelaire du Temps).

Hula hoop! Great form of exercise and I can’t keep the stupid thing up for more than a few seconds.

Fly. Was absolutely certain I could fly as a child.

Eat as much as I want and be skinny as could be

All the flexible, physical things I could do! Go thru crushes! No real responsibilities.

ParaParaYukiko's avatar

I don’t think I’ve lost many physical skills, but I miss having the time to do all the things I used to do as a kid. In high school I was involved the chorus, school newspaper, karate, piano lessons, Spanish club, my own DDR club, National Honors Society, AND I still had time to write and draw every day for myself. Now I’m lucky if I have the energy to do two of those things.

I also wish I could still climb trees like I used to. That was cool.

Trampolines have not been any fun at all since I went through pregnancy and childbirth. I bet all the mothers here know exactly what I’m talking about.

fireinthepriory's avatar

Same as @Dr_Dredd! I used to be a high, high first soprano. I remember easily singing the high parts in Balulalow and Spring Carol and the rest of a Britten’s Ceremony of Carols, which are some of my favorite Christmas music. When I try to sing those songs now it doesn’t sound as floaty and pretty as it used to, plus it hurts my voice if I do more than one or two songs. I’m still a 2nd or metso soprano, but no longer qualify for first soprano. :(

Other than that I prefer being an adult to being a kid! I like having control over my own life.

nebule's avatar

ballet dancing… but I’m working on it!

tinyfaery's avatar

Play the piano, guitar, clarinet and read music.

DominicX's avatar

Not really. Still have my ability to cartwheel, backflip, run, bike, swim.

But I’m only 18. I’m not old yet. :P

@Facade

There’s a picture of my brother and I in a big cabinet when we were little. Cutest thing ever. My dad had the picture put on a mug that he keeps at work. lol

Facade's avatar

@DominicX Lol, that’s awesome =)

daemonelson's avatar

I could lick my elbows easily. I can only do it very occasionally now after a lot of stretching.

dogkittycat's avatar

I used to run track but now I have asthma and I can’t do it anymore not to mention I have knee problems because of sports, I’m still active but not as much as I used to be just tennis, volleyball and bowling. No more basketball or track for me; (

Dr_Dredd's avatar

@fireinthepriory It totally bummed me out. On the other hand, I used to sing with an a capella group in med school, and one time when I was getting a cold I was able to hit the bass line on Billy Joel’s “For the Longest Time.” :-)

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

Water witching. When I was young I could do this with a tree branch. I went off to college and got educated and I lost the ability to do this.

wilma's avatar

Oh dear @Adirondackwannabe You lost the gift?
Keep trying!
I can do that, I hope I never lose it.

ultimateego's avatar

yeah, punch people in their face. now if i did it, their head would probably be twisted around at 360 degrees.

drClaw's avatar

@ultimateego the saying is “no stupid questions” not “no stupid answers”

Dumbass

welcome to fluther

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@wilma Yes, I have lost the gift. I am going to try some more. I think I just need a quiet day so I can reach my primitive side. It was pretty cool when I could do it. Stupid education.

Nullo's avatar

I didn’t have to watch my behavior as much. Which may be why I need to keep an eye on it now.
