What makes inside jokes so funny?

I find that inside jokes are by far the funniest when it comes to jokes. Most of the time you can say just one word and everyone knows immediately what you’re talking about. Everyone in the inside that is. People on the outside usually don’t understand what’s so funny. Why is it that inside jokes are so hilarious, when they rarely make any sense?

Maybe because they’re different than a normal, “Why did the chicken cross the road?”, type jokes? Maybe because they are only funny to those on the inside and that makes it all-the-more exciting?
They always make sense. An inside joke is a joke that is exclusive, coming from some situation that a few experienced. It’s funny because that one word or phrase reminds the group about that funny situation that happened. If you go see a comedian with a friend, then mention a phrase from a skit he or she did at work in a group, only that person you were with will know what you’re talking about at that moment. It’s similar to sharing a secret with someone.
Inside jokes make people feel special because they are part of the select group that know what the heck that person is talking about.
I think this goes back to a more fundamental question (that I can’t answer): what makes anything funny? What does “funny” really mean?
I think TROGDOR makes them so funny. Just guessing, though.
90% of people won’t get that…
The right people will totally get that.
People made of Win.
Because inside jokes are like secrets, only funnier.
When it’s so specific that only a few people get the joke, it’s becomes personal.
The best thing about inside jokes is they can evoke an entire story or memory because of one phrase, or word, noise, facial expression, etc.
That’s what makes them so spiffy to me. =P
Isn’t “trogdor” from Guitar hero?
@Sampson Yes, but that’s not the origin. It came from Home Star Runner.
Yup, this video in particular.
That’s why it’s an inside joke.
@J0E Blew my mind. Sort of.
