Is what I'm experiencing withdrawl symptoms from caffeine?
I have decided to stop drinking pepsi. Up until yesterday I would only drink pepsi. I’d estimate around 5 a day. Everything seemed fine but last night I started getting a horrible headache. I went to bed hoping to sleep it off but I woke up today feeling even worse. My head is throbbing, I’m naseaus, and feeling lethargic. Is this caffeine withdrawl? How can I ease the pain? How long should I expect to feel like this? :( Please help.

That is great that you’re coming off pepsi, your teeth will be grateful, and your health will improve.
If you’ve been drinking that much pepsi for a long time, then I’m not surprised you are suffering withdrawal. Have you got other drinks you like, maybe diluted juice or herbal or green tea?
Your body should stop experiencing withdrawal symptoms after about three days.
Try and hang in there!
Yes. Basically you are going to feel like shit coming off of caffeine. Head ache, tired, and even look or feel sick, not like catching a cold, but just not feel at your best. First, you should not completely quit all at once. Get down to 3 a day, then 1, then none over a few days. Since you are already into the headache, you can just see it through and take some ibuprofen and deal with it. No need to start all over really, but if you wind up cheating and trying to quit again later, take my advice and don’t go cold turkey. Also, you will be falling asleep everywhere for a few weeks.
People think they are not addicted because they feel normal when they consume soda, not jittery, able to sleep, blah, blah, but if you consume caffeine daily pretty much a 97% chance (I made that number up) you will suffer when you withdraw.
I quit years ago, and in the end it is worth it. You will feel better when you wake up, and calmer in general.
By the way if you drink caffeine know it will take several hours for cafiene alone to get rid of your headache, so you will still need ibuprofen, and you will still suffer, so might as well finish the agony since you already started.
Ok thanks. I have been drinking pepsi for years and years so I guess I’m not surprised that I feel like shit now that I’ve stopped cold turkey. This is worse than the flu! But I refuse to take a sip of that poison. I’m going to stay strong and get through this horrible headache. Wish me luck!
I don’t think the years and years has much to do with it. If you quit for 10 years, and then start drinking again for two weeks, you are going suffer a little when you quit again. Not if you have half a soda, but if you get back up to even just 2 a day, you will suffer a little again. 5 sodas a day is quite a bit, so it is worse.
Here is the wikipedia, go down the page to tolerance and withdrawal. I didn’t read it all through, but thought you might be interested.
headache could be a sign of dehydration. so try drinking water. if that dont work then yep you are withdrawing
@JLeslie Thanks for the info. I’ll definitely check out wikipedia.
@shadowofdeath I’ve been drinking lots of juice and water so I don’t think it’s dehydration.
good just hang in there then and stay on drugs(hah…..i mean painkillers{asprin}) your misery shouldnt last long. though tea contains caffine i would reccomend drinking either lavender or chamomile tea as it is very soothing(especially with honey), tea is very tasty and much better for you than pepsi. plus id think it may take a bit of the bite off
The headache is caused from vasodialation in your head.
If you care more about getting off of the sugary beverage than getting off the caffiene, why don’t you try drinking some coffee or tea? Congrats for quitting the soda – you will feel great once you’re done going through the caffiene withdrawl!
@occ Good idea. I never even considered that. Makes sense though. Sorry guys, I’m not at all myself today! My mind is barely functioning. Damn that caffeine.
@JLeslie Yes the sugar, calories, and overall unhealthiness of pepsi.
Well, the consensus is tea is best if you still want the caffeine, coffee second. You’ll feel better not being dependent on caffeine also, you will never have to worry about the headaches. If you stick with caffeinated beverages you will need to make sure you get it by noon, or suffer the consequences later in the day.
