Why do so many British people emigrate to Canada?
What are the benefits to a British person of emigrating to Canada? They seem to go in droves. It can’t be the weather, nor the health care. So what is it?

I guess because if one is British it’s easy, and Canada is a land of opportunities and a great country. Britain is a bit overpopulated.
I’ve heard that Canada is one of the nicest places to live (all round) in the world… nice people, nice scenery… I don’t know… but I have it from several reliable resources…
It’s US-Light for them !!
@Marrakech where do you live if you don’t mind me asking?... (hopefully not the obvious cause then I’ll look really dumb! lol)
My health visitor (one of many people I have asked about Canada) has relatives over htere and lived over there for a few months herself… she said it was just simply brilliant..and she said that the people are the nicest you will ever meet in your life… it’s a whole different way of looking it life and the world… apparently… can’t remember what part she said… but if this is indeed true I might do some more research into the phenomenon!!!
I haven’t had a holiday abroad for years… I might start saving and go a find out myself…
I as a British person would jump at the chance to live & work in Canada if they’d have me, England is fast becoming the dumping ground of Europe what with the relaxed border policies & free hand outs, ethnic crime is on the increase fuelled with drugs etc the place is fast becoming a ticking time bomb, it’s just not a pleasant place to live, I’d really like to be elsewhere when it all kicks off, the government have no real solutions to the problems this country is facing , as usual all they do is talk & talk & talk, there’s no sense of England anymore, for me if I could get out then I would as soon as I could… :-/
@Scooby: You sound like some Americans.
@asmonet People sound like that in every country in western Europe, and parties from the far right is growing support all over.
Canada is welcoming to immigrants such as myself. Newcomers integrate well here, unlike in xenophobic Europe. Sure the weather is harsh if you come from warmer climates, but you get used to it eventually. I live in one of the most exciting cities in the world, Montreal, which has something for everyone in terms of entertainment and lifestyles, and at the same time is affordable. O Canada! :D
I’ve visited Canada (Toronto) and I loved it. I can easily see why people would fall in love with it. For one thing it’s like America, except the people are more like Europeans. Things are more familiar than they are in the US (I’ve visited there too so I can compare).
The only thing that puts me off is the weather. Winters here are already too cold, I wouldn’t be able to tolerate a Canadian winter.
@asmonet You are right about that. But it’s not much better in the US with the extreme Christian right.

Oh yeah!! “At least we have the NHS! ” :-/ good one Lol…
@Scooby I’m going to presume that was supposed to be sarcasm… but I was referring to this and I wasn’t being sarcastic.
You really really…. should be grateful
@lynneblundell
Plenty of people carry the banner for the British NHS, I’m not one of them! From my own experiences I have no faith in it at all…….. :-/
The NHS has saved my life twice so I’m not going to complain.
@downtide thank you… point made
but really @Scooby If you took the time to read about the sorts of things that people go through because they have no access to the sort of medical care that we have you might appreciate it a bit more.. I personally have thought and do that our medical system is a wreck but the fact of the matter is…it isn’t isn’t… in comparison.
Yes it is ALL relative… but
I can go to the GP and talk about whatever I want and he will listen… for no direct cost
I can get referred to a specialist for no direct cost
I can get Kidney scans for no direct cost
I can get Sigmoidoscopies for no direct cost
I can get Urondynamics tests for no direct cost
I can get additional consultations for no direct cost
I can get Prescriptions for no direct cost (given circumstances)
I can get Counselling for no direct cost
I can get Physiotherapy for no direct cost
I can go to A and E and they will look after me for no direct cost
I can take an overdose and they will look after me for no direct cost
I can break my arm and the NHS will make it better
I could go on….
The point is…
I’m not a banner waver for the NHS…to be honest they haven’t really done a great deal to cure “my” depression… but I just know how to be fucking grateful…
take some medicine it’s free – ish x
@lynneblundell
Well, I’m not grateful for it’s failings & it certainly has failed me to a great degree!!!
Thanks for your insight but I’ll remain unconvinced of it’s benefit to me, That’s why I now go private.
So you keep taking your medication with no direct cost, I’m happy to pay for mine.. :-/
well I think you’re obviously rather privileged to be able to afford private healthcare, the majority of us can’t.
