Can you give an example of a time when you "splurged" on a purchase and found it to be very much worth it?
What was the item or experience that you bought? What made it better than lower-cost alternatives—if such alternatives exist? (I know that the idea of a “splurge” is subjective. Your splurge just has to be a splurge from your perspective, not from anyone else’s.)

I’m glad I bought an HDTV. I continue to enjoy it daily.
My GPS and the car I have now.
I’ll answer my own question. My Dansko shoes and some trips that I have taken. Oh, and renting my current apartment, because it allows me to live without roommates!
Back in the good old days, when Coach made quality leather handbags and not status symbols with C’s all over them, I bought one every few years and really enjoyed using it.
I paid £700 for Barbra Streisand tickets. Worth every penny and I would pay the same and more to see her again. (That was in 2007 and I am still paying it off!)
Installing a new kitchen, to me heaven is owning a dishwasher, goodbye rubber gloves!
My college education – 52k a year and I’m going to enjoy every bit of the money I make after I graduate.
@answerjill – how hard is living w/o roommates?
@sevenfourteen – I live in an expensive area and it is a splurge to rent by myself. I could save some money by having roommates to share the rent.
I was going to buy a new car and ended up buying a slightly more expensive sports model which turned out to be the an excellent decision…
It is so much more comfortable and reliable than the alternative and I’m glad I splurged =P
I got an iMac instead of a desktop PC. It probably cost twice as much, but I have thoroughly enjoyed the user experience aspect of Macs. For me, at least, they were absolutely worth it, because I spend all my time in front of a screen.
Shoes are definitely worth splurging on too, just because saving a few dollars is never worth the pain of terrible shoes.
Bought a Bose Wave Radio/CD player.
It cost more than other systems, but the size of the thing is neat & compact and gives a lovely sound without the need for extra speakers and wires hanging about.
I bought a chef’s quality Japanese knife for my kitchen.
It was worth every penny even though I have had to retrain myself to not apply force like I did with my old knives.
So far, I haven’t managed to amputate anything too important and it makes prepping dinner a snap uh-oh where did I leave my thumb? breeze!
mine is a la pavoni expresso maker. it will last forever. @Merriment what kind and brand of knife? I want a good knife but don’t know anything about them- mine are all about as sharp as an eyeball
@trailsillustrated It is a Shun Classic Chef’s knife with 8” blade.
According to all the research I did they stack up like this: 1st place Shun, 2nd place Misono (also Japanese) and 3rd place Westhof (german).
Size is based on the size of your hands and what you feel comfortable with. The blade is razor sharp but as importantly the knife is very well balanced, easy to grip and has etching on the sides of the blade so that the sliced food doesn’t stick to the blade.
Admittedly I didn’t use the competitors and I know someone who loves their German knives, but I am happy, very happy with the Shun.
@Merriment thanks, I’m going to order one- I have westhof knives meh—thank so much for the info
@Merriment could you tell me do you have the hollow edge one? what does( it mean ‘right hand’? (i’m ordering one now hehe) does the right hand thing matter?
My MAC makeup. It is very very pricey, but every morning I look forward to doing my makeup, and I know it’s gonna’ look good.
I just spent $410 dollars on anesthesia to get my butt knocked out while an oral surgeon removed two wisdom teeth and a shattered molar.
Best. Money. Ever. Spent.
A very large antique German 19th century chromolithograph in its original walnut frame. It was beautiful.
I kept circling round attempting to talk myself out of buying it….but that was a dismal failure.
As for “worth it”? To me it was worth it for its beauty. Later on, I saw one that was not as good quality of a print and half its size for a higher price…so financially, I suppose it was a good investment.
